Is this bad?

Ok this is at this point hypothetical so don't start ranting...

I'll make it quick, I have the JBA Falcon, it got busted up in a crash so I fixed (almost), moving to France in two years time where they spit on kit cars and won't allow them on the road, unless I gather it has been SVA'd ah ha!

So what do I do? do I go and get the car inspected and put on the road using the old reg and documents that have it a an X reg Ford Falcon but does not allow me to drive it in France or...do I ditch that identity altogether and put it through an SVA test (bit of work but I think I could do it) and then get to use it when I move.

Bit of a pig to read, sorry but what do you think worth it, legal??? What about pictures, I never took any the first time as I didn't have a camera in those days. I have a few of the post crash rebuild but not many, receipts errrr haven't a clue and JBA ain't trading any more, at least this engine has number.

Any ideas folks, desperate to get the little sh£t back on the road especially with the new carbs

Can't you drive it on UK plates? OK, you'll have to take it to Dover every year for MOT, but that isn't too bad?

Are you confident it is SVAable? I wouldn't want to fail and then try to get back on the road on the old plates.

Could you sell it in 2 years time and buy a France Friendly car?

As for taking it back to GB to get it tested, well I'll be at the bottom of France so it is an awful long way to go for a yearly test and very costly to do it that way.

Not sure the best way to go about this. Was hoping to use it as my every day transport giving the better climate.

Yeah if I keep the car simple and bare minimum it should pass, the later Falcon's were SVA'd and I can get the seatbelt mounting sorted.

I thought it was already on the road in UK. Surely its just an import into France you need. How will they know its a kit as opposed to type approved tim top.

I always thought that people in the south of France got their chauffeur to drive the motor to the MOT.

From what I understand it is niegh on impossible to get a kit car registered in France. Even though as part of the EU they should allow them to be registered they seem to ignore that bit. Many have tried to get one registered in Holland and then slip in under the radar but that is allegedly a no no. There are one or two that have managed it and there is now a dealer in France for new Westfields who seems to know how to do it but if you know a way please share as I would like to do similar in the near future

Sorry to break the bad news Whippy but officially you cannot import your Falcon (or any other kit car) over here.

The way it works is that for a car to be sold and used over here it has to have been homologated by the importer.

If you want to bring in a car (or bike) on a personal import basis then it must be recognisable as a vehicle that has already been homologated. This is generally confirmed by the serial number or "type" shown on the logbook.

The only other possibility is to try and homologate your own vehicle. That involves a huge amount of very expensive paperwork and testing at the DRIRE (based at Monthlery) and the rules are so complicated and strict that no one really knows for sure if a vehicle will pass. The majority of civil servants over here seem to enjoy bu%%ering people about and their favortie word seems to be "non".

The only other possibility is, as said before, to bring the car over on UK plates, insurance etc and go back once a year to MOT. Check with your insurers on the timescales permitted. If you do get stopped I would like to know how "they" know how long you've been here anyway. You're just a Brit on holiday aren't you?

Edited to add:- There is another scam, er I mean imaginative solution, whereby you can get the car registered in the name of someone in the UK (family?) and then you won't have the potential problem of the authorities finding out how long you have been resident over here.

Basicly the only option then is to get it registed as my sisters car and keep the uk plates, getting it MOT'd in england, damn that's a long drive for an MOT

I can see me selling the thing now

Don't sell it Whippy. It would be worth the long drive for the MOT just to see the faces of all the french car nuts. Drive anything out of the ordinary over here and it becomes very special.

Hi Whipp's

I can confirm Mike has got it pretty much spot on.

If you are still a British resident with a UK address you can use it in France for a max of 6 months.
If on the other hand you are going to be a French resident then the 6 months rule does not apply,
and you have to get a UK registered car reregistered in France as soo as possible
Not that seems to bother a lot of Brits around here who have had UK number plates with French CT (MOT) and insurance on there cars for years
Not that is a lot of help to you, or me for that matter as you probably wont be able to get French insurance for a kit car anyway
