Escort rear axle oil seal/bearing?
David Jenkins - 9/10/12 at 05:10 PM

Found out today that my Escort rear axle ("English axle) is leaking oil at the one of the bearings, which is a pain in the bum... The bearing itself is fine, it's just the seal.

I now need to look around for a replacement, together with the retaining collar - can anyone recommend a good supplier?

Also - anything I should look out for? In my first tentative searches it looks like some have an o-ring on the outside, and others don't... confusing...

i replaced one earlier this year and its now leaking again which seems to be a common problem with a lot of the ones available now.
i did get 2 last time but i'm not sure if i want to fit the other one in case the seal fails again a few months later.

all the ones i've had have had the o-ring's although the originals ones i replaced 3 years ago didn't.

Mine are for Burton, 'O'ring type and I have a leak on a side
I have removed the ring and use silicone, it's the same.

The o-ring was one reason for asking - I'd seen an advert rubbishing the o-ring types, but I wasn't sure whether that was due to advertising puff, or based on real life. Unfortunately he hadn't got any of his 'good ones' in stock...

Oh - while looking in this area - I notice that my rear brake cylinder is weeping a bit... better change that while I'm in there...

one of mine leaked for about six months after doing both has now stopped so not going touch it now! Oh and still has plnty of oil in it.

i fitted the ones with o-rings - bought off ebay and are fine - it can be quite difficult to get the bearing in without snagging the o-ring - one side wnet in almost first time, other side was a nightmare - been a while but i have a feeling i had to replace the o-ring as it was damaged but whatever i did, it has no leaks. so take your time when fitting and make sure the o-ring is going in all the way round.

Hi.
The ones with the o.ring are cheap imports. the o.ring does not stop the oil flowing straight through the bearing. you can try making a thin gasket to sit on the inside face as per the original design.

David Jenkins - 9/10/12 at 09:16 PM

Thanks for that - looks like I should look for a "no o-ring" one if possible.

I didn't know about the gasket behind the bearing; it isn't mentioned in my Haynes Book of Lies!

My other challenge is to identify the brake cylinder, as according to Haynes there were 2 types. It doesn't help that I don't know which model the axle came from, although it appears to have come from a 1300 Escort (judging from the ratio), and is a Timkin type English axle.

I've changed these a few times and they quite often leak. I have tried lots of different ones but the last one i bought hasnt leaked, got it from here:-

We also smear a lot of sikaflex sealant on all the mating surfaces, this seems to help, but not of the oil pees through the bearing itself.

FAG do it: 713 6782 30
SKF do it: VKBA 960

but very difficult to found.
If anyone know where buy, please tell here.

An other solution is to replace by a good quality join in the cheap bearing.

That FAG reference is very useful! I found the SKF one in a couple of French web pages, but they didn't seem to cater for people outside France (postage etc.). However, a number of UK sellers have the FAG one for a similar price, and at £40 + shipping they're not much more expensive than the general-purpose ones sold on ebay. I'd rather pay £10 more for a top-notch brand anyway, as I don't want to be changing bearings all the time...

Here's the FAG link (bottom of page)

FAG Bearing supplier (UK)

I later found a SKF seller ( Note: look out for the promo code shown at the top of the page when ordering - 35% off!)

SKF bearing supplier (UK)

I've ordered the SKF one - we'll see how good it is shortly!

Note:

The French seller was:

I 've try to order the SKF unit a coupe of weeks but they can't have it.

please tell here when you receive bearings

Have you tried Hayleys in BSE?

Nick

David Jenkins - 11/10/12 at 02:13 PM

I've just ordered one from Unipart in Ipswich - mostly so that I can get on with the job. They're very good to deal with, as they'll let me check it over before I pay my money (I'll take my digital vernier tomorrow to check the dimensions!).

I don't know how Unipart make their money... he didn't have one in stock (which was no surprise) but he's getting one from their Oxford warehouse - by the end of the day! They don't charge for shipping this stuff round the country either. I've had gaskets that have come from Cambridge & Colchester, all within the day, at no extra charge.

I'll let everyone know how this bearing works out...
