I've got a £5 on the bolt

Have you tried the irwin bot extractors?
Brilliant piece of kit!

Sump bolt shouldn't be that difficult on the basis that it's been bathed in oil

scootz - 28/10/09 at 12:10 PM

Has it become 'round' yet? That's when it gets really interesting!

speedyxjs - 28/10/09 at 12:18 PM

My 5 quid is on the garage

damn that bolt to hell! i swear when i get it out im going to kill it with fire. its now completely rounded, and ive left a fair amount of skin from my fingers in the engine bay.

bolt wins again, this time! but tommorow i have a friend / ally coming over, with tools of un imaginable destructive power!

What engine is it? Older Ford ones can be a pain sometimes but the answer is a blow-torch. That will melt the washer out and it'll come out easy then. The oil will dissipate the heat easily so don't worry about that.

brilliant cheers for the advice, ill give it a go in the morning, oh and yes its a pinto with shortened sump.

Find a big nut that fits over the now round stub, weld it on (around the inside) and then undo it.

1) you can get a decent sized spanner onto it

2) it will be bloody hot

BenB - 28/10/09 at 04:16 PM

I also enjoy the weld a nut on it approach. Heats up the plug nicely and gives the spanner something new with straight edges to apply some NM to....

adithorp - 28/10/09 at 04:47 PM

Used to be a regular problem; usually on a Monday after someones dad had rounded it off on Sunday. Just play the blow-torch flame around the plug then it should come undone with pliers/mole-grips.
Don't undo it with your fingers when it's slack or pick up the plug though once it's out! Thats easy done!

Wait until you've been struggling for half an hour before realising the bolt's facing the other way and you've been tightening it all that time!

James - 30/10/09 at 03:05 PM

File a couple of flats on it and use an open spanner? Worked for me a couple of times.

Or molegrips done up really tight.

Cheers,
James

Adjustable pipe wrench? They tighten up the more leverage you apply.
This sort of thing.

Stillson wrench, or more commonly, Stillies.
