Ouch!

55ant - 28/4/10 at 03:09 PM

it was bound to happen sooner or later silly old gordon, why did we vote him in in the first place.

BenB - 28/4/10 at 03:11 PM

I thought it was quite amusing personally! Does make it quite obvious however that all the politicians "appearances" are completely set-up and pre-organised!

That's the thing, we didn't vote him in! But, we can vote him out!

matt_gsxr - 28/4/10 at 03:17 PM

Now that is a properly bad day.

He didn't do anything that we don't all do everyday, but its going to lose him the election.

iscmatt - 28/4/10 at 03:45 PM

it was funny watching on the telly bbc and sky news fighting over her in the street to ask their questions and to try and stop from walking away and force feeding her to demand an apology from gordon brown. Also seeing gordons reaction in the radio studio was interesting.

mookaloid - 28/4/10 at 03:48 PM

Obviously he only shows his true colours when he thinks no-one is listening.

The man is a complete Charlatan and as said above he was never elected.

If he gets back in because of people voting for 'butter wouldn't melt in the mouth' Puritanical Clegg - who forgot to mention that he made himself a small fortune selling a house which in Strasbourg which he bought by receiving £250 per DAY!!!! subsistence allowance when he was a euro MP..... I will leave this country if I can get out.

He just can't be allowed back in

Agriv8 - 28/4/10 at 03:50 PM

Oh the " conn's " camp will be thinking 'Own Goal ' fantastic !

Waiting to see how the 'Laborites' try and spin out of this one!!!

reminds me of when the old dear flustered maggie somthing about the falklands war incident for giving the go ahead to launch attack on a argie ship that was leaving the 'Disputed controll waters' was it on qestion time ?

suspect that going to be a huge nail in his coffin !!! and give gravitas to the labour MPs wanting to oust him

Dear Gordon you have cheered me up

Regards

Agriv8

Mr G - 28/4/10 at 03:55 PM

Madinventions - 28/4/10 at 04:04 PM

Well hopefully that'll make sure he doesn't stay in 'power' - gibbering dunderhead. The media are going to tear him to bits.

<reaches for popcorn>

I wonder who'll be next?

Simon - 28/4/10 at 04:13 PM

As I said earlier, it'll make no difference cos those that voted for him will swallow his grovelling apology (like the woman he referred to) and all will be fine and dandy.

I'm afraid that I think that is the attaitude of all politicians to all voters. They are a means to an end.

Ban the big three parties I say.

gottabedone - 28/4/10 at 04:15 PM

Imagine if he'd launched into the tyrade of abuse that you see some people let loose with when they think that no-one's watching

Steve

tomprescott - 28/4/10 at 04:47 PM

Haha, I was havig a discussion with a friend a couple of days ago about politics in general, his argument was that politicians are there as representatives of the people, my argument was that he was right about the basic principle but that anyone seeking power is unsuitable to hold it, all politicians are there to serve themselves rather than the people they represent.

I think Gordy just proved me right, as above, voters are merely the means to an end; to stay in power!

scootz - 28/4/10 at 05:20 PM

They were never getting my vote in the first place, but still... I think it is plain wrong that they chose to broadcast a private exchange like they did!

Yes, he should have remembered he was linked up, but come-on... so he expressed an opinion on an individual whilst chatting in private - what the hell does that have to do with the colour of oranges in Saigon!

Er, in case you hadn't noticed this man is trying to win an election, and seeing his true colours is something we are entitled to.

He (who I pay for) was being driven around by someone who I've paid for, in a car I've paid for and was overheard on a mike that I've paid for, held by someone else I paid for (assumed bbc) so I want to know everything that he does - especially if it makes him look a prat!

Some goes for all future civil servants - who I pay for!

JoelP - 28/4/10 at 07:52 PM

calling someone a bigot isnt an insult if its true. Ive not heard the exchange between them, but would it make any difference if he was actually right and she was bigoted? Or would you hang him for calling a spade a spade?

adithorp - 28/4/10 at 08:11 PM

"... calling a spade a spade..."

Now thats not biggoted. It's plain racist!

I agree though, it all depends wether the woman is a biggot. Given the average UK citizen ranting about immigration then the law of averages is on his side.

iank - 28/4/10 at 08:19 PM

Decide for yourself.

Original "fixed up" spontaneous interview.

His 'off the record' comments

scootz - 28/4/10 at 08:50 PM

Nope... nothing 'bigoted' on that interview.

That said, I still think the TV company have overstepped the mark in broadcasting the conversation that followed.

Rod Ends - 28/4/10 at 10:09 PM

iank - 28/4/10 at 10:26 PM

Quite a day, or a spectacularly cynical attempt to deflect the media onto a different story.

It was broadcast to all the TV companies. The man is simply too stupid to be running a country.

gottabedone - 29/4/10 at 05:48 AM

For goodness sake why does a politician need an agent?

jabbahutt - 29/4/10 at 06:57 AM

How dare that woman pose difficult questions to the unelected lord of all he surveys!!

I'm suprised that the poor old dear isn't being sped off to Guantanamo on some anti terrorism charges as we speak.

So if you're not happy on the way these idiots are running things and lets not forget they allegedly answer to us not the other way round and call them on it your a bigot? Well for more reasons than I can count that make me a HUGE bigot as I think this country for multiple reasons is going down the pan.

Anyone up for starting a Locostbuilder common sense party?

The rules are that a politician cannot put themselves forward for an election, an agent has to do it on their behalf. All candidates in a general election has an agent (my Brother in Law is one). The agent does all the bookings and makes arrangements, leaving the politician to do canvassing and speak at hustings, etc. My Brother in Law has been working 15 hour days 6 days a week for ages now and there's pressure on him to do more. They need an agent.

Hmmn, "Wog" isn't in common use on this side of the pond -- is it as much of a slur as I think it is?

scootz - 30/4/10 at 07:03 AM

What's the word "wog" got to do with anything? As far as I recall it wasn't said in this exchange...

TRANSCRIPT OF EXCHANGE

Gordon Brown: You’re a very good woman, you’ve served the community all your life -

Gillian Duffy: I am, I’ve worked for the Rochdale council for 30 years…

Brown: Good. You deserve -

Duffy: And I work with children and handicapped children

Brown: Oh well working with children is so important isn’t it? Have you been at some of the children’s centres? –

Duffy: But what I can’t understand is why I am still being taxed at 66 years old because my husband’s died and I have some of his pension tagged onto my pension?

Brown: Well we’re raising the threshold at which people start paying tax as pensioners, but yes if you’ve got an occupational pension you may have to pay some tax but you may be eligible for the pension credit as well, you should check –

Duffy: No, no, I’m not, I’ve checked and checked and they said I’m not

Brown: Well you should check it again just to be sure, to be absolutely sure.

Duffy: Yes they’ve told me, I’ve been down to Rochdale council

Brown: And you know we’re linking pension to earnings in two years' time, we’ve got the winter allowance as you know which I hope is of benefit, two fifty -

Duffy: I agree with that, it’s very good, but every year I speak to people of my age and they say ‘Oh well, they’ll be knocking it off’

Brown: We’ve done bus passes as well, free presciptions -

Duffy: But how are you going to get us out of all this debt, Gordon?

Brown: We’ve got a deficit reduction plan, cut the debt by half over the next four years, we’ve got the plans that have been set out to do it - look, I was the person who came in and said -

Duffy: Look, the three main things that I had drummed in when I was a child was education, health service and looking after people who are vulnerable. There are too many people now who aren’t vulnerable but they can claim and people who are vulnerable can’t get claim.

Brown: But they shouldn’t be doing that, there is no life for people on the dole anymore, if you’re unemployed you’ve got to go back to work. At six months –

Duffy: You can’t say anything about the immigrants because you’re saying you’re – but all these eastern Europeans coming in, where are they flocking from?

Brown: A million people come in from Europe, but a million British people have gone into Europe, you do know there’s a lot of British people staying in Europe as well. So education, health and helping people, that’s what I’m about.

Duffy: I hope you keep to it.

Brown: It’s been very good to meet you. And you’re wearing the right colour today! How many grandchildren do you have?

Duffy: Two.

Brown: What names are they?

Duffy: They’ve just come back from Australia where they’ve been stuck for ten days they couldn’t get back with this ash crisis.

Brown: They got through now?

Duffy: Yes.

Brown: We’ve been trying to get people back quickly. But are they going to university, is that the plan?

Duffy: I hope so. They’re only 12 and 10.

Brown: They’re only 12 and 10! But they’re doing well at school?

Duffy: Yes. Very good.

Brown: A good family. Good to see you.

Duffy: And the education system in Rochdale I will congratulate it

Brown: Good. Good to see you, take care.

[In car] That was a disaster. Should never have put me with that woman. Whose idea was that?

Aide: I don’t know, I didn’t see.

Brown: Sue’s, I think. Just ridiculous.

Aide: Not sure if they’ll go with that one.

Brown: Oh they will.

Aide: What did she say?

Brown: Everything. She’s just this sort of bigoted woman who said she used to be a Labour voter. Ridiculous.

cd.thomson - 30/4/10 at 07:56 AM

Some stuff missing from the transcript, at about 40 seconds -- I've listened a few more times and it could be -- "lots" are being let off with things -- that I misheard.

Cheers, Ted

Ninehigh - 30/4/10 at 04:39 PM

Finally someone's published what she said to deserve it. I've been wondering about that since I first heard it
