John, I hope you can get the car to Exeter, notwithstanding the snow and that all goes well. I shall certainly be thinking of you.

It will be some days before we can get out of our lane with the drifting (the snow that is!) and the snow plough having piled up along our exit. My 4 wheeler is away having work done so, really good timing.

Best regards

John

Good luck for tomorrow.
I'm waiting for SVA date to come through and have applied for Exeter. It'll be interesting to see what their 'pet' points are ref. SVA. Don't forget to post the outcome on here.
As an aside, just how long did it take for your date to come through from day of posting your Application?
I sent off mine on 22nd Jan and they cashed cheque for fee on 29th Jan but still yet to hear anything. Were you contacted by phone or letter?

Cheers,
Andy.

Hi Andy,
VOSA's SVA response was around 10 days. I actually got the date from Byron a day or two before the postman delivered it.
I'd gone to meet him to sort out a couple of issues face to face. (and also so that we didn't meet for the first time at the SVA itself)
All the snow has gone - we only had a couple of inches early in the week.
Cheers,
John.

12 hours to go!
It's a bit like that feeling of having an exam next day and you're not sure whether you've done enough revision!
...but I've got a nice bottle of Merlot on the go, so it's not that bad!

Ah well, a 'good fail' I think they call it.

1. Worst was speedo misbehaviour - reading very low all through the range when on the rollers. Then when driving around the yard it went into 'twitch' mode, reading zero/40/zero/40 at 20 mph. There's a fairly tight curve as the cable leaves the g/box then the full-length standard drive cable loops to the front of the chassis and back to the speedometer. I think I need a right-angle connection to the g/box and a shorter cable. Otherwise, apart from very slightly smaller tyre rolling radius, the speedo bits are all as removed from the donor.
It read 58mph at actual 70.

2. Main beam relay (or associated wiring) decided not to play, so I had dip only.

3. Hazard switch was binding in the hole in the dashboard. My own silly fault - I knew it was like that but thought it would be OK

4. HT leads not adequately secured.

I could certainly have fixed 3 & 4 on the spot, and probably 2 for anything other than relay failure. Even #1 could possibly have been fixed by dosing the drive cable with oil.

I'd been a bit too over-enthusiastic covering the threads and nuts of the upper wishbones with a covering that was considered not to be permanent enough; likewise the side mirrors. Coverings removed.....'that's OK'.

The engine was playing up - just wouldn't idle cleanly and low enough, but eventually tweaked things sufficient for the emissions test to be completed successfully.

No problems with edges or radii and the brakes were fine.

Thanks to Byron's advice and patience, not to painful!

And it rained....

John, well done that man!

Nothing too bad there that cannot be easily rectified.

I sourced my right angle drive from Speedy Cables. The irritating bit is that you will need a new cable as well as it is threaded onto the right angle drive input.

Sounds like you got on well with Byron. He really is a top man.

Best wishes

John

Hi John not bad at all you will soon have your hands on the pass sheet.
When i did my speedo cable i cut it down then brazed about 25mm at one end and filed a square on it to fit the speedo head

Seems a 'good' result, John. Should be simple enough to remedy the fail points. Just had confirmation today of my SVA appointment:-
Monday 23rd February at Exeter - so 12 days to go. Have been busy making car SVA friendly with edging trim, nut covers etc.
Do you know if Byron will accept self-amalgamating tape wrapped around upper 'bone ball-joint and spring platforms as 'permanent' or not?

Andy.

Andrew,
I had some rubber sheet (ex wheelbarrow inner tube!) carefully laid around the upper wishbone ball joint threads and lock nut and retained with ty-raps. I'd done the same on the wing mirror supports. These were all considered not to be adequately 'permanent' and I was asked to remove them. The hemisphere couldn't reach the ball joint threads and the lock nut didn't present a problem in respect of a 'glancing blow'.
The mirrors were actually OK on radius with the shrouds removed. I was just being over-cautious when I'd fitted them.
I haven't used self-amalgamating tape, but I don't think it would be considered 'permanent' or equivalent to what a manufacturer would do.
I covered the top and bottom ends of the front spring/dampers with some rubberised canvas tube that just happened to be a nice snug fit; it's secured with ty-raps and elicited no comments!
All best wishes for the 23rd.
John.

I think I've fixed my speedo problem....
Disconnected the g/box end of the cable and drove it anticlockwise with a battery-powered drill/screwdriver - the speedo wasn't very steady and there were noises like a dry bearing. Disconnected the upper end of the cable and it (the cable inner) looked to be rotating cleanly and quietly...so it had to be the speedo itself! I couldn't fully turn the input shaft by finger grip alone.
After dosing it with some light oil it gradually freed up and now, again driving the cable from the bottom end, it's quiet and steady!
I guess that 5 1/2 years of inactivity have caused any grease or whatever lube is in the speedo bearings to dry out.

Dip/main both work now; again it looks as if inactivity was the cause, probably a bit of oxidation on the switch contact needed to be wiped off - waggling the switch a few times seems to have sorted it (reliably!)

Thank you for your kind comments!
Speedo fixed, HT leads strapped, dip/main works; now just have to fettle the dashboard hole for the hazard button to move freely and call Byron to fix up completion of the SVA!
