Chassis No. and SVA

What are the SVA rules concerning the location of the chassis No. and does it have to be welded to the car if on a seperate plate or can it be riveted ?

My letter from the DVLA says "The number should be stamped/embossed on the off side of the vehicle in a clearly visible and accessible position, and by a method such as hammering or stamping, in such a way that it cannot deteriorate or be obliterated. It should also be stamped / embossed on a plate which is attached to the vehicle".

Not from memory obviously!! I had my letter to hand because they rang me today to tell me the chassis number they allocated was wrong! Good job I aint got it stamoed on yet then eh!!!

Surely you make up your own chassis number using 17 numbers/digits of your own choice. The plate cannot be rivited on because that can be easily removed, it must be permantly welded or stamped on the chassis.

No, it varies from DVLA office to DVLA office. Best thing is always to contact them first and find out

You need both.

Cheers,

Regarding Vin numbers.
You can make up a vin UP to 17 digits/letters, so it can be less than 17.
You must not use I, Q or the letter O.
As regards making your own, think about imported cars, they have a vin supplied in the country of origin and when sva'ed here, the dvla have to accept that number so making your own should be no different.
Use a free vin checker (google) to test to see if your chosen vin exists. If not use and supply that one.
If you think that you might duplicate a vin, think again. The lottery is only 6 numbers and the odds of picking them is 14,000,000:1.
