Sunny weekend, but cant get tax!
Just had the car MOTd this afternoon...
Drove home... had a cuppa, and then went online to try and get tax..
Fill in all the information, tells me the car has not been taxed or on SORN since 2003... (I bought the car a few months ago!)
And then tells me that they can not issue tax due to a technical error...
This happens online and on their website...
Firstly... are they denying me tax because of the gap in payments? And how do I prove to the Nazi DVLA that the car A didnt belong to me, and B has
been off the road!
If it makes any odds... the tax is free anyway!
Would I have better luck in a good old post office?

post office unless you're not the registered keeper, when did you register the car it's only after that date you will be liable for any
fines etc do you have a v5 in your name

Get it done at the post office.
You should have SORNed it when you bought it. It doesn't carry over from the previous owner (even if they'd done it).

Hmmm...
I bought the car 7 months ago... And transfered it to my dads name 2 months ago...
I had assumed it had been off the road since before SORN, so therefore didnt need to be done... hence why I didnt!
Am I going to get a nice big fine from them? And can I fight it?

do you mean you bought and registered it in your name seven months ago then registered it in your dads name 2 months ago, if so odds are if you tax it
now nothing will come of it. if not you'll be popular with your dad. of what I can gather you (not you personaly) are not liable for previous
owners liability, that's why it is so important when you sell a car to send off the change of ownership slip, because if you don't you are
liable until the new owner registers the car.
ie if I bought a car off you 6 years ago and I haven't registered it in my name and you didn't send in the slippy thing you're
liable for the sorn as dvla still have you as registered keeper

If the car has not been taxed since SORN was introduced (after 31/1/08) it doesn't need to be. Once it goes onto the "new" system
the registered keeper is responsible to SORN it.

Don't refuse to pay, but it's always worth challenging it. With sensible reasoning, so long as you've paid your tax when you
realised it was due, you might find that they see no point in pursuing it.
Not from experience, but it seems to work with parking tickets, if the TV programme was correct...
