Can i keep the orininal VIN number and registration?
Can i keep the orininal VIN number and registration?
I am building a modified Sylva Mojo and putting a 1990 Rover Mini Cooper shell over the top. I've had the Mini for over 10 years and it's
been SORN for many years in my name. I've totally removed the front end and floor plan.
I just wanted to know as far as IVA and the DVLA can I keep the original VIN number and Reg plate?

No, it's a 'radically altered vehicle' and therefore requires SVA/IVA and a new registration. See info on DirectGov.

No but you MIGHT get age related if you can convince the DVLA that the mini was the major donor

AKAIK you can only keep the VIN and plate if the chassis or shell of original vehicle is largely unaltered.
I know in cases like land rovers where there is a seperate chassis, you can fit a new body and retain the VIN etc if the chassis is unaltered. Not
sure what happens in the case of a vehicle with monocoque / shell.
In your case - No.

I made up my own VIN along the same lines as you proposed. I then sent a letter to DVLA proposing the number before actually stamping chassis - they
wrote back aggreeing that it was acceptable.
On new cars DVLA dont issue every single number, the manufacturers put them on - not really much different to what we normally do.
Interesting project BTW. Im wondering what would have happened if you had grafted strategic parts of the Mojo into the mini rather than other way
around. I know it would still have been radically altered, but maybe more of the shell would have been original. Not sure if the mini subframes
constitute part of the chassis. Many people change them and cut big lumps out yet retain original ID and reg.

i know what you mean, i had pondered on just getting an MOT on the original Reg plate but decided that if i ever had an accident my insureres/courts
may have something to say about the radically altered chassis.
I think I'm going about it the right way.
Who do I contact at the DVLA regarding a new VIN?

They won't like the I's and O's. As for making up your own/kit manufacturer supplied number ; It should be OK but depends on the
(mis)interpretation of the rules by the bod at your DVLA office.

IF you are confident in getting an age related plate you COULD get the car MOT'd and then put the registration on retention, then IVA/SVA it and
use the retained registration not 100% legal but possible.

If i tried to do that you could bet your life DVLA would want to inspect the original vehicle before transferring the plate to retention cert
