Best engine for IVA
I'm set on an R1 engine, however, I want that to be my winter conversion project. I would quite like to pass IVA end of August/september time?
So, which engine (pre '95) is going to be easiest to pass IVA with? Im thinking 1.3 pinto on carbs, as its a small engine, will surley make less
noise, and emmisions. And as a 1.3 pinto isnt popular in demand, it would be cheap? Also with a car box, would remove the need to think of a seperate
reverse method?
Cheeeers in advance guys!

are you going to put a pinto in for a few months and then pull it all out again in the winter?

1.8 Escort Zetec, cheap easy install with bike carbs. fits the Sierra running gear to get you going.

Put some car engine in, then convert to BEC at earliest wet and cold convinience

Personally i'd say just build it with the bike engine and fit a catalytic converter. If you are using an injected engine then you should be able
to sort the emissions out using a Powercommander and getting the cat nice and hot. You might need a more efficient exhaust can to get down to 99dB but
then again you will need it to do plenty of the track days given the limits imposed.
Reverse?
Can always bodge a bigger more efficient exhaust...?

you can borrow sva kits with packed exhausts. mine passed noise test at sva with R1 engine. i would put the bike engine in from the start. it will
save you an awful lot of money for a start.

Just make sure you have a fuel system suitable for injection (do you need to run a return to the tank?) when you build it. If you get an exhaust
system from somewhere like MK im sure their bike and car systems are the same except for the headers. Either choose a car engine where the exhaust
exits the same side as the bike engine you want or get an exhaust that goes over the top chassis rail then you can just get a new bonnet or modify the
exhuast hole as an intake or something.
Its not a bad idea really. You should be able to get an engine and box for next to nothing out of a donor car. Then you just make sure that everything
is there ready for the swap when you build it.
Biggest extra expense will be the exhuast I reckon. But you will save that on a reverse motor.

1.3 pinto's are incredibly rare, doubt you'd find one at all.
1.6 pinto is the cheap one that's easy to find.
But I'm another for fitting the R1 from the start, there could even be theoretical insurance/legal implications from retro-fitting a BEC
with no reverse gear after IVA comes into force.

I agree with Paul, get the R1 engine in from the begninning especially from a cash/bodywork hassle point of view.

With my R1 engine i got 96dB at SVA. i have a 4-2-1 exhaust, then a cat, then a 5" kitcar exhaust from Europa that they no longer list

1.3 crossflow, lighter and smaller than pinto and will have exhaust on same side as bike engine (I think) and will sit under bonnet without any cut
outs.
lots about, in fact I should have one spare very soon.
