number plate legalities
is anyone up on the law regarding front plates on a 7 then? I'd prefer to get a proper one for the rear and then a vinyl one on the top of the
nose cone - but i suspect this is illegal? I'm sure I've seen many running round like this (and some without anything on front).
Alternatively a proper one below the grill, or a 'smaller' proper one.

People get away with stick-on plates, small plates, plates at unusual angles etc but they're all illegal. Really you need a full size plate on a
horizontal surface on the front of the car....

But in reality I would think 50% take the risk, rather than make the car look crap!

I have a smaller plate mounted under my nose cone. It's approx 10"wide, but conforms to the regs in terms of font, spacing, colours,
materials etc. It look's "right" on the front of the car and IMHO is better than a near horizontal stick on vinyl one.
As an example, last summer I parked outside alocal police station whilst having lunch in a pub opposite. A number of beat officers wlaked past and
stopped for a look at the car, some even came out of the station to take a gander - no problems encountered.

I just got a 12" x 3" plate from here, I have fitted it below the nose cone.
The car is only just registered so I will see what happens the first time I pass the plod. I do have a full size one but there isn't room to fit
it properly.
Why do they call Port Harcourt "The Garden City"?...... Becauase they can't spell Stramash.

We did without a front for 3 years with no problems[1] until the first MOT, then we stuck a full sized one on using those double-sided "sticky
pads" expecting it to fall off within a few miles. 2 years later it's still hanging on, if I'd actually wanted it to be permanant
it'd have fallen off within minutes 
[1] Was once mentioned by plod in a panda when I'd been pulled (but not done) for speeding but as he wasn't Trafpol, I made something up
about it being under a certain weight like a motorbike and therefore didn't need one, he nodded and agreed with me

There are loads of random laws concerning number plates - like the script of your numbers, where the plastic bolt covers are and what colour, it needs
to have some little icon in the bottom right(?) hand corner. I think it may also need the name of either a dealers where the car was bought or the
name of where the plate was made. Then again, this rear plate has none of that:

Plod is getting stroppy about number plates because of GATSOs and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras. Fine dodgers took to
"cloneing" number plates, the practice of looking for a car that is same make, model and year, noting the reg and putting it on their own
car so the other guy gets the fines.
So now they have made it illegal for anyone except a legal, authorised outlet to supply plates. And these outlets must ask you for various documents
to prove the identity of the car and the correct reg no. The plates they produce must have things like their tradename etc. on them. Any other plate
is illegal. Needless to say there are still loads of web sites supplying plates without paperwork, and quite how Plod will ban show plates I do not
know.
Oh yeah, and guess what; there's suddenly an upsurge in plates being stolen off cars. Now there's a surprise!
Older cars will have plates that predate the law so plod probably have to be switched on and differentiate between plate ages anyway.
In the mean time, stick on plates can still be had from HERE

there is a small amout of room for argument in that the regs allow for a smaller plate (dimensions on dvla web site) if the car is designed to take
smaller plate.....
seeing as we 'design' the cars it could be worth the argument.....
been trying to get a plate made up to that standard but cant find anywhere that does it....
