Private number plates???

Does anyone know what the law is regarding fitting private plates to a kitcar.

It looks as though my car will be a 'Q' plate, if i ever get that far. I have a private plate on retention, can i register the car with the Q plate and then put on the private number once on the road?

Probably not.............that would be too easy!

Once a Q always a Q unfortunately, so you cant put another plate on it.

If its not a Q then you cant put a plate on that would make the car newer than it is....

If its a D reg to start with, you cant put any plate later than a D on. Only earlier.

Probably doesnt make sense...

Sorry. If you get a Q plate it has to stay as a Q. If you want a privat plate on then you need to get an age related plate first.

Will i get a Q reg?

I am building a Toyota 4AGE powered Locost with a Sierra gearbox, Escort back axle and prop and Cortina front hubs.

unfortunately i dont have a V5 for any of the above, although i have the complete Corolla.

Do i have any options/possibilities, or is it a definite Q plate?

Are there any tricks out there to get by the problem?

Surely most Locosts must be Q plate, if not why?

You definitely need a V5 or youve no chance. If you could get a V5 then you have a chance, you need 2 major components from Engine, Steering assy, Axles (both), Transmission, Suspension (Front & Back). Therefore if you can get a V5 you could change (theroretical) say the engine to the 4age before you use it as the donor.

It is looking like a Q plate for me then.

What is the problem with that? is it just the stigma attached?

How does the registration mark affect the value? not that i can really see me selling my car.

What other disadvantages are there to having a Q plate?

I can think of one big advantage to a Q plate, no emissions test come MOT time
