DVLA Maidstone RANT

Had my inspection a week and half ago... The inspector said that I couldn't call it LOCOST because it was a registered name.

He then said that I couldn't have an age related plate because I made my chassis and they were only reserved for Manufactured (by a company) chassis.

Obviously I argued both points telling him that there where hundreds of LOCOSTs and I knew of at least 2 cars in kent that had home built chassis with age related plates. He then said he'd never heard of locost or the book.... so how did he know locost was already registered???

Anyway, he said he'd check with his manager and paperwork would be in the post last week.

Yesterday afternoon the phone rang (his manager), she told me that she'd checked on the name and I COULDN'T have Locost, and then asked me loads of questions about my car trying to catch me out on something... in the end she agreed to look into an age related plate. But only after i'd given her all the details of Dogwoods car (locost with age related plate)

What also annoyed me was she was rude and was eating while talking to me!

How many people had their cars called LOCOST and have age related plates with homebuilt chassis?

Don't think i'l be on the road for summer

Ben - the woman you need to speak to at Maidstone DVLA is Julie Whittaker. She dealt with the registration for both my cars and there was no bother (even though the lackwits at Swansea tried to create some)

Did you register a homebuilt chassis?

I have a nasty feeling it was Julie that rang me

No - my latest was a Robin Hood S7 .

If you continue to have problems with the |Locostname, then call it a "Locost Copeland Special" etc.

I think the main problem is they simply dont know what to do with a homebuilt car. Kits are no problem.....

No help here I know, I have done things the opposite way around. Car is booked in for DVLA inspection next Tuesday and this is before IVA, this is to get the Name and more importantly for me the VIN number issued.

Then I can hopefully get the car insured on Chassis number and apply for IVA. Dealing with Swansea was a pain, getting face to face with the local office was a pain, doing it all via phone even harder so I really hope you manage it all before the summer ends, good luck.

There is a benefit to naming it a non-recognised name.... if you built a 2nd car that didn't look anything like a Locost and gave it the same chassis number and plate... no one can argue it's not the right type of car for the name!

Cheers,
James
