1st January 1973 is the cut off Steve, I doubt you'd have any prblems with the Jago with White on Black, as long as they are regulation size.

Since Q registrations didn't start until 1983, they wouldn't qualify for whit/silver on black plates.
Also, how could a 1974 car have a Q plate? Stolen recovered?

I have some history... it was originally built with the donor reg, NTA 189M - 1974. I have some docs from 1992 when it had a DVLA inspection and was
re-regged on a Q.
Last MOT has year of manufacture as 1974... still waiting for the V5, they have cashed the cheque...

Is it jersey or guernsey that has black and silver? You could register it there.

because its a Q plate it can use black and silvers, a Q plate is a Q plate becasue the vehicle is of an unknown year, it may have been built in 74 but
was given a Q because it didn't get the number of points to take 74's plate or was made from a number of vehicles from about that year, i
think you'll find as far as MOT goes, most things on a Q plate car are tested and seen as pre 73, the fact its a Q plate means the police and or
anyone else can't say it is or isn't pre 73, so black and silvers are fine, i will be using them on mine, and i will fight if i get a
ticket.

I beg to differ: MOT rules for emissions etc. are separate and car is "treated as if it were pre-73" for emissions only.
Rules for black and white plates are clear: vehicle constructed before 1 Jan 1973, so IMHO no Q plated cars would qualify.
If in doubt, check the V5 for date of construction.
...having said all that, plod might not be very clued up when it comes to Q plates, so you might in practice get away with it.

Exactly what Humbug said ^^^....
Emissions are a totally separate thing.
Coozer, black and silvers are only permissible on cars manufactured before 1st January 1973......
Do the police know about Q plates and black and silvers? .... well the 'old school' will, don't know about the 'newer'
ones...so as Humbug said,...you 'might' get away with it.....

Still waiting for the V5... anyway's if it says:
"date of registration 1974"
Then:
"Year of manufacture = Unknown"
Can I claim pre 74? AND, more important can I claim historic status and free road tax?

Don't think so mate... I think they used to go purely on the registration, but made exceptions for cars registered on/after 1 Jan 73 if there
was documentary evidence that they had been manufactured beforehand, e.g. factory records with the chassis number. In this case "Year of
manufacture unknown" doesn't prove it is pre 73

Aw bless Coozie ...
I think you will find that if the year of manufacture is stated as unknown, 'they' will take the year it was registered......and IIRC
'M' was August 1973 to July 1974 ....
So,.... to have been any where near a chance it would have to have been an 'L' suffix....(August 1972-July 1973) .....
