SORN - Can I drive till the end of the month?

Tax runs out at the end of the month, I want to SORN the car over winter.

If I SORN it today, am I still taxed till the end of the month?

Don't want to get into bother!

Not sure but I think you can only SORN a particular month - at least that is what happens when you apply for a refund on the tax disc.

Sorn the weekend before end of month online.
Re tax on the first of the month on the month you want to star driving, if you try and tax before DVLA charge you for the previous month, I know, they caught me out that way

1) You can only tax for the following month something like 10 days before the 1st of the month.

2) Direct quote: "When SORN has been declared for a vehicle the registered keeper must ensure that it will not be used or kept on a public road until a new licence has been taken out. The declaration will be valid for 12 months unless the vehicle is re-licensed, sold, permanently exported or scrapped"

If you sorn it, before the end of the month, you will get done for not displaying a tax disc.

I wouldnt do it.

Seems pretty simple - SORN it at the end of October. Safest way now is to do it online - that way the DVLA cant "lose" the form and then try to fine you!!

You effectively have 14 days grace, so do it in the fist 2 weeks of Nov:

When SORN isn't needed
SORN isn’t needed if:

•you no longer have the vehicle and DVLA has been informed
•your insurance company has written off the vehicle
•you take the vehicle abroad permanently
•you apply for a refund of vehicle tax and don’t keep the vehicle
you are keeping the vehicle off the road and untaxed for less than 14 days
•your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998

FWIW i think you can go a little over and get away with it - i sorn'd my spare van on the 3rd of this month and they didnt mind that that was 3 days with it in limbo, untaxed and unsorned. Much longer and they will send you a fine though!

If you do it online you get an email back immediately, followed by confirmation through the post.
