UPDATE on lift the dot studs & IVA

Just had a reply from VOSA regarding the use of lift the dot studs for my boot cover ........... See thread

Good afternoon morning Mr.Pendleton ,

Thank you for your enquiry which has been passed to me due to its technical
nature. This has caused a delay in you receiving a reply, for which I
apologise.

This issue is covered under section 16 (Exterior Projections) of the IVA
manual. I have copied a link to the latest version of the manual below:

http://online.businesslink.gov.uk/Transport_files/124_IVA_M1_Inspection_Manual_Version_1010.pdf

From this you will see that if the fastening protrudes more than 5mm from
the surface of the bodywork the dome would require a radius of curvature of
at least 2.5mm. However, if it protrudes less than 5mm from the surface of
the bodywork the dome would only require to be blunted. Having carried out
a crude measuring exercise, using the photograph supplied, it would appear
that using your measurement of the dome at 6mm, the fastening protrudes
more than 5mm and would therefore simply require a radius of curvature of
at least 2.5mm, which at 6mm diameter, (and assuming the dome is completely
spherical) it would.

I do hope this information is helpful, but should you have any further
questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best regards,

So looks like lift the dot studs it is then.
RD

I Haven't seen the posts you are using, but the ones on my MG were slightly pointed and much less than 2.5mm radius at the tip.

doesn't suggest a fail to me, but just that if correctly radiused they'll be fine, which is what it says in the manual, so nothing new there really

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Yeah
The one's I am intending to use are 6mm dia and spherical at the tip so 3mm radius.
I know the type you mean, they are slightly tapered and virtually flat on top.

Think I'll be safe enough ....... only one way to find out.

I doubt it, if the ball is 6mm in diameter you will be fine, but all the ones I have seen (including lift the dot types) are much smaller diameter and hence will fail (radius is half the diameter, so the ball must be at least 5mm in diameter to pass). Pop fasteners should pass as they are blunt and protrude less than 5mm from the body (which has got to be the case for the size you would choose for the car?).

Or put it another way Catervan's and westfield's use pop fasteners on there hoods and pass..

If the cover is on with the associated lift the dot bit then it will pass IVA.
My reasoning for this is that you intend to drive the car with the cover on therefore the tester would have to test as is and not remove the lift the dot bit.
