MOT test proposed changes for 2012

Through the grapevine very unofficially I have heard these MOT test proposed changes which may be brought in in early 2012.

A whole raft of proposed changes to the MOT test all of which create additional failure points.

Some of it is purely to update the test to include all the electronic and electrical safety systems cars now have --- if you have ABS, ESP SRS,electric parking brake, headlight wash wipe, head light levelers (automatic or manual) they and any associated warning light must work normally with no indicated fault

Where HID headights are fitted checks will be made that self-leveling and headlight wash wipe is fitted.
Main beam warning light becomes testable.

Seat belt mechanical pre-tensioners will be examined for signs they have activated

Removal of emission equipment will become a fail.

Tightening up of examination of drive shafts and steering/suspension --- inner drive shaft joints including rear will be checked, holes in rubber gaiters and dust seals (including ball joint and track rod end) become a fail, these changes are probably in preparation for the German style 4-2-2 testing cycle.

Checks on wiring security.

Checks on tow bar socket wiring

Fuel pipes condition to be examined for leaks and security

LPG system basic leak test.

Inappropriate repairs or modifications ---- this is can of worms clearly aimed at the cruising fraternity likely failures would include line locks, hydraulic hand brakes, excessively lowered suspension, extended leaf spring shackles, bonnet mascots, tyres too wide or too narrow for wheel rims, tyres protruding outside body work, locked welded) diffs.

In the longer term the end of annual testsafter 3 years and the introduction of a Euro standard 4-2-2-2 testing requirement looks inevitable which is probably not a good thing unless you buy a new car ever 3 or 4 years.

In the much longer term it is also possible we may see emission testing via the OBD port with tail pipe test as a fall back option. This is already done in some parts of the USA.

so the test fee will probably go up then to cover the extra time required to do the tests

I still need to reset the airbag/ srs light on the Z3

I have very mixed feelings about it ---- most of it is common sense and just catching up with modern technology (modern automotive technology is not always a good thing) and some is clearly aimed at moving towards 2 yearly testing and it will increase the the cost of an MOT.

The inappropriate modification section will cause real hassle.

4-2-2-2 testing I also have concerns about although for me personally it would make my life easier.

German style MOT

First test 4 years after first use/registration of vehicle.

Second and subsequent tests every 2 years.

Because of this German test puts much stricter demands on wearing items like tyres --- essentially you need to put 4 new tyres on just before every test.

Tow bar electrics will not include the old style 7 pin sockets , only the new16? . pin as fitted to new cars. IMHO all tow bar sockets should be tested as should all trailers

That would mean registration which equals cost, next it will be insurance for each one etc. etc.

I am surprised a general clamp down on trailers didn't happen after the rail disaster caused by the idiot that fell a sleep at the wheel and went down an embankment.
