Immobilisers/Alarms
Can any one help please.
Before i cover up all my wiring and finally fit my dash thought i better get an immobiliser and alarm fitted, IVA say a category 1 system should be
fitted but looking at what they cover they seem to be a bit overboard for a kit car but if that's what has to be fitted then that's what
has to be fitted has any one got any advise on what type/make to go for.

by the looks of the manual, you have to have a mechanical or electronic immobiliser. thats fine, but under alarms, the heading of the page says
"13B Anti – Theft / Alarm
Application: Vehicles subject to Basic requirements (optional fitment)"
so an alarm itself is optional it seems, but says that IF you have one then
"Ensure the vehicle as presented is accompanied by satisfactory documentary evidence of compliance with the requirements for a “Category 1
immobiliser” installation"
so if you have an alarm, you have to have documentation to show its been fitted according to category 1 requirements,

Thanks for reply Blakep82 i understand if i have an alarm immobiliser fitted it has to be acompanied by documentation of compliance, can't get
my head around what i have to have i am trying to understand how little i can get away with on my car i have paddle gear change i don't think
i can fit a mechanical anti theft device to this, i also have a steering wheel that can comes off and an FIA master cut off device but these are not
concidered as anti theft devices.
So am i correct in thinking if non of above can be used as mechanical devices then i can get away with just an immobiliser with documentation of
compliance for category 1 immobilisers, i don't have to have an alarm as well or do i ref 13B
(note1: A category 1 installation refers to an immobiliser and alarm).

as i understand it, immobilisers alone are cat2, alarm+immobilisers are cat1 (the likes of clifford, toad, etc so not all of them are, they have to be
approved by 'thatcham' to get the status of category 1 or 2)
to meet cat 1 or 2, they have to be installed by a professional who gives you a certificate to prove its been installed correctly. thats the idea
anyway, if you buy them on ebay, they sometimes come with the certificate.
what i'd do, is have your normal key switch fitted (you have to have that anyway) and if you still have your steering lock fitted, thats it
covered, if not, fit a transponder type immobiliser.
but, if its JUST an immobiliser, no documentation is needed.
so key and steering lock if you can
or
key and transponder immobiliser
job done

I understand now under 13A if all else fails i have to have an immobiliser that would be cat 2 and that is the basic requirement, anything else under
13B is optional.
Just found a company on ebay selling a cat 2 immobiliser which has a transponder attached to the ignition £129.00 fitted and they come out to your
home, but i will have a look around locally first.
Thank you for your help once again.

well, thats the thing. i was only saying about cat 1 and cat 2, for what they relate to (you won't get a category 1 immobiliser, or a category 2
alarm basically), but there's no mention of category 2 installation for an immobiliser, just that one needs to be fitted, this is the one
i'd be getting
eBay Item if your comfortable doing electrics yourself. as long as it works, thats good for IVA

I've got and fitted one of those sterling transponder immobilisers. Piece of cake to fit and does the job well. Mine didn't come with
any instructions but they are on this site if you need them.

Have been reading on a few posts on other sites that some insurance companies will insist on certificate of compliance and also it can make your
insurance cheaper.
