Reconditioned engine headache

I'm having great difficulty with my engine with regards to SVA.

The engine is out of an A reg sierra, but is a reconditioned unit that was fitted about 3 years ago. Now, when Ford recondition engines they very helpfully stamp out the old engine number and don't bother to replace it

This means that my engine effectively has no engine number. Not only that, since the engine block is not the same as the one that was originally in the sierra, the number on the reg document does not match the one stamped on the engine (which has been crossed out, just to confuse things)

My question is this - how am I supposed to prove how old the engine is? I've contacted the DVLA, SVA and Ford and none seems to know what to do, obviously this isn't the kind of problem their staff are trained to deal with.

As it stands I may end up having to take the standard CAT emissions test, which my engine will obviously fail abysmally.

Anyone got any idea how this can be sorted?

PS Apparently engines don't need an engine number to be registered, some manufacturers even produce brand new cars with no engine numbers. I wasn't aware of this until today

Would they accept it if Ford were able to give the last year of manufacture of your particular engine? They may take it as that is as young as it possibly could be. You may lose out on a few years, but it may be worth a shot.


If not, I think your up for the full test.

That's what I was hoping. The woman at the SVA call centre said it would possibly be OK but she couldn't guarantee it. There was no SVA inspector at the local centre when i phoned but there will be one tomorrow so hopefully he will be able to clear it up for me.

When did they stop producing the pinto? I know it was a long time ago but I don't know the exact year.

Also would there be a difference in the emissions test for an engine made in, say '86 and an engine made in the last year of production? Would a later engine have to pass stricter emissions tests?

I might be able to find out from Ford Micro Cat when you engine was produced. Can you send me your original engine number? (email, u2u, or post it here). I'll have a look when I'm at work tomorrow.

Almost worth borrowing someone else's engine for the test/registration process.

Is it possible to get an engine number re-stamped to match the one on the registration document (or an appropriate aged engine)?

I was wondering that myself, and if the engine was out of the car the answer would probebly be yes, but it's VERY difficult to access at the moment and I don't want to take it out again. I'll see if i can sort anything out before i have to resort to extreme measures...
