how many & which parts needed for age related plate?
Hi all
I have previously built a westfield & qualified for an age related plate. Back then 2006 & sva from memory I seem to recall that you had to
use 4 out of 5 specific parts to qualify for the age related plate. Is it still the same?
I am currently in the very early stages of building a Sylva J15. I am not that bothered about having a q plate but was just wondering what the current
state of play was.

it hasnt changed they still want 5 major components or the body.
Anything With Tits or Wheels Will cost you MONEY!!

I'm pretty sure that's not the case, on the v627 build declaration there are 6 major items. I only had 2 and I got age related. I'm
sure I read somewhere you need 2 or 3 major components (I could be wrong).
Also I could have put anything on that form and it would have gone through as the inspector only looked at the vin numbers.

There is a points system that allocates points for different Componants, still based on the major Componants but some score more than others.
Worth a look at the V627 as its quite clear.
The only Componants that is easily traceable is an engine with engine number the rest is open to some interpretation, who knows what rack is what,
hubs may be Sierra but not from the donor, I fitted a V6 gearbox and a Pinto engine.
In essence engine, gearbox, steering, axles, suspension

The 'Points System' is for radically altered vehicles, not kits.
The kits system is 2 major components used from a singe donor to retain an age related plate (age of the donor)
This is currently not listed on the direct.gov site, however I emailed them back in July and it was confirmed the case:
Kit Conversions
This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body/chassis/monocoque
bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration document/Certificate.
A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major
components are used.
If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis/bodyshell from an existing vehicle)
together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle.
An IVA/SVA/MSVA test will be required to register the vehicle.
Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an IVA/SVA/MSVA certificate will
be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.

Sorry to jump in on the thread, that quote in bold mentions a new bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used. Does that
mean a home made chassis won't qualify for an age related plate, even if two major donor vehicle components are used?

It should mean that yes, but there are many on here have got their home built chassis thru on an age related plate, its just typical of the DVLA hit
and miss regs.

I had a feeling that I had heard of a change having been made.
I know what is meant about putting anything you like on the forms. My Westfield used a donor sierra but had a zetec engine diff & disc brakes etc
from different cars. The DVLA inspection was a joke really just looked at the vin plate.
Just wanted to know the current situation before I commit myself to much.

Theres nothing to stop you changing things post registration, so if you need to use a pinto and a type 9 to get it registered, theres nothing to stop
you 5 minutes after you get your reg doc, swapping to a zetec with an mt75, or a duratec or a BEC. As long as you fill in the v5 with the appropriate
CCs etc.
(above is based on the westfield example, not the j15 as that will be a FWD gearbox.)
