Think you might have jumped the gun there, don't think the OP was the one that started the thread he's reffering to

That's what I was about to say too, think he was just asking what happened to it.

Go on then. name and shame them !

Ringing is illegal as it usually involves someone having their pride and joy stolen. It is not funny and aiding and abetting the practise should have no place here.

im glad its gone, however it went. we dont want to be promoting that kind of thing on here or anywhere its exactly what will scare the rule makers into banning building your own car at home.

The land rover community have been waging a bit of a war against it as there are so many later vehicles registered to v5's from older ones that are tax exempt.

They report anything that anyone spots on ebay where, for example, a coil sprung landy is being sold as a tax exempt series 3.

Same reasons, if it becomes endemic the authorities will stop things rather then just enforce existing rules.

I looked at the chap from yesterday's other posts an it looked like he had/was selling a race locost. Presumably, it might be useful if selling something like that to have a spare v5 for something similar. Be worth keeping an eye out.

I'd suspect there are a couple of different angles to this question (or perhaps I am being too kind...?)
1. People who are building a kit car from a wide selection of parts but don't want a 'Q'. Hence a 'single donor backstory' is what they need for registration - and frankly I can't see any major ethical issues with that, although I accept it is fully outside of the rules.

2. People who are stealing cars and changing the identities in order to sell them. of course this is just plain wrong.

I guess the risk is that if we accept 1. it makes it harder to stop 2. ....

I was interested in seeing whether the original thread would have prompted any discussion about my point 1. ...

I spotted one this morning a green 90 truck cab with serious off road gear running around with a F suffix plate which no way was a retained personal number

Back in the 1980's I had a mate with a late 1960's Morgan who wanted to compete in a pre-1965 racing class, so he bought the log book and plates off a wrecked but not officially written off 1965 Morgan, to borrow the old Leslie Phillips' catch word ding-dong

About 3 yeas later the cars chassis was so rotten that the chassis and a lot of the body panels were renewed so I guess by the way things worked in those days it was "unrung".

You missed out :-

3. Avoiding IVA so they can put an untested death trap on the road coming the other way to you.

A good point i hadn't considered, although i guess the same argument applies to people who fully strip and rebuild classic cars, who probably should submit their car for some kind of test but i imagine rarely ever do...

I guess 2 and 3 are more likely to relate to 'desirable' cars, 1 is more likely to relate to late 80s Sierra Sapphires, etc...
