You should let them know of the engine number change but I'm sure many people wouldn't bother if it's just like for like

Thats what I was thinking, but some one has told me that if there was an insurance claim , its likely that the insurance company would not pay up if
the engine number did not match what was on the V5. Any body any thoughts or experience of this ?

Unlikely tbh. As long as you told them what engine it is I doubt they'd care.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like a good idea to get it done, I did not realise it was easy to do and no cost.

Dead simple, there's a section on the V5 for new detail, just fill it in and send it off, iirc you only need to send a section of the V5 off,
not the whole doc.

My experience of changing engine numbers involved a bit of paperwork.
Engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)
You’ll need to provide either:a receipt for the replacement enginewritten evidence from the manufactureran inspection report provided for insurance
purposeswritten confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the vehicle)
