Original plate 8 points later engine change?
Say I build a car on a chassis and keep the Reg based on the 8 point rule having submitted a V627/1 - but I only have 8 points inc the engine.
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-altered-vehicles
If I then want to swap out the engine at a later date will it then need an IVA despite having been driven around for a year?
Any one point me at the legislation on this ?

Only matters at point of registration.

Nope, it does matter and would need IVA.
Same as any car that has been modified and then doesn't make teh 8 points. Hence loads of escorts running about with modified shells that SHOULD
have an IVA.
When I built my spitfire I had to be very careful. I am on 8 points. Just.
Unless you are saying the "radically altered vehicle" resets the points, and you can then change a load of stuff again (but still have to
keep the unmodified chassis or monocoque)? But there is nothing to confirm that on the guidance. Better to be clear that something IS acceptable,
otherwise you really are up a creek if/when things go wrong.

The points system threshold triggers the IVA.... I guess effectively resetting the points system as this is then the date of registration??

probably safest to check with DVLA. If it goes pear-shaped, saying "a bloke on a forum reckons...." is not that helpful

My point is that the OP mentions "keep the Reg ", so I assume he's concerned about loosing the reg? (Perhaps not). Which can only
happen if he has to re-register the vehicle.
DVLA guidance on gov.uk (see here https://www.gov.uk/change-vehicle-details-registration-certificate) says:
"Change of engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)
You need to provide either:
a receipt for the replacement engine
written evidence from the manufacturer
an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
written confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the vehicle)"
Mention of change of engine number. No mention of IVA.
Yes - plenty of cars (like the Z-cars bike engined minis) should have IVA - but that's because they are 'radically altered' - not
because of the engine swap....

There are hundreds if not thousands of modified cars on the road that might need IVA.
However this situation is different as once this one is registered using the 8 points. it has been correctly registered. Any future modifications are
no different to modding a type approved car or making chanes to an IVAd kit a few days after IVA.

I’m not so sure.
You have a type approved vehicle from a major manufacturer and you have a limit of modification (8 point system) before it needs another approval
(IVA). The V627 doesn’t change that approval, it just recognises the changes to that original approval.
Once it has an IVA, you’ve essentially reset the 8 point counter as it was approved in the condition submitted?

But its also reset when u register it under the 8 points system. If i change various parts of any car over time it doesnt matter. Only if i do them at
the same time. Its the triggers broom analogy.

The points system works from "as manufactured". So, the timeline is irrelevant.

Surely once your car is registered the parts on it are now part of that car and you would need to change 8 of those parts to trigger the change

I think that if you have built and registered a car correctly then only major changes tomthe cahassis would invoke any sort of procedure, simply
changing an engine is not a major chassis change unless you put an engine in which requires major structural changes.
If it was the case then lots of us would be in real truoble for putting a Zetec in instead of a Pinto!

I presume the OP is trying to avoid the IVA test otherwise why not just IVA the car once completed and fitted with the engine you want.
When you are using the 8 point rule you are not registering the vehicle as a new vehicle, using the 8 point rule is about making changes to an
existing identity (registration)
So if you then change something and it no longer meets the 8 point rule you could well find you get refused an MOT test and the car getting referred
for an IVA test. - Yes this happens
Never under estimate the ingenuity of an idiot!

Except an engine change is DVLA notifiable whereas loosing your IVA wing mirrors is not!
Just to re-state the original question.
Normal Car
Bunch of stuff modified but I have 8 points, fill in the form keep the reg get a new V5 with the mods noted if required.
IF 1 year later I want to put in a bigger engine. IVA or no IVA ?
Hoping to find the actual legislation on this.
