MSVA vs IVA
Evening all,
Given all this enforced garage time  my mind has turned to new projects.
After some googling around some sort of bike engined single seater looked interesting.
But this has lead to my question...
What falls under MSVA and what falls into IVA?
I've seen a few things... under 400kg???, under 100bhp??? under 1m x 2m???
But I'm not sure if any of those are correct?

there's a huge range of vehicles that fall into the msva testing, essentially most things smaller
than a passenger car
yes mopeds and the like are restricted on speeds etc, but there are plenty of very powerful (and fast) motorbikes
trikes can be about 1 tonne
heavy quads upto about 450kg, plus batteries...

And now I'm confused again
Surely most of our kit cars fall into the "smaller than a passenger car" category.

no a kit car realistically is a passenger car
m1. if you built a heavy quad 400kg plus batteries/fuel you would be restricted to max15kw power, trikes and bikes have separate limits.
as before, just look at the manual (politely rtfm...)

Sorry I did read (at least the foreword) of the manual. It looks like anything with 4 wheels must fall into one of:
* mopeds -> light quadricycle, with max speed of 28mph
* Motor tricycle -> 4 wheeled vehicle, with max power of 15kw
Have I understood correctly?

The Motor Tricycles category includes both trikes and heavy quadricycles.
Trike - an example is the R1 engine MEV, 3 wheeled, under 1000kg, no power or speed restriction.
Heavy Quad - an example is a 2CV engine Pempleton Brooklands, 4 wheeled, under 400kg, under 15kw power.
15kw = about 20bhp. I believe this is at the wheels and I understand that the tester will accept a dyno print out. As for the large quads, I can only
presume that an engine change takes place after MSVA or they have some form of type approval in another country?

I have been looking at the differences between IVA and MSVA and I am not sure which to go for.
It will be under 400kg, 4 wheels and initially 2CV powered and so MSVA would make sense as it would be easier to pass. However in the future if I
wanted to add a slightly bigger engine, say up to 50-60hp would I need to re-test under IVA? So I am considering going for IVA and then its future
proof.
