Do you need a steering lock?

Simple question.

Do you need a steering lock to pass SVA ?

Thanks,
Pat...

NO...as long as you have an anti-theft device such as a battery cut off switch or immobiliser of some sort....but it must not be able to be operated when the engine is running.

I think the rule is something like:

'You must have an anti theft device, either mechanical or electrical that cant be operated whilst the engine is running'

Thats my understanding anyway...of course i could be wrong.

Probably the easiest solution is to fit one of those transponder type immobilisers. I got one for £35. Im planning on fitting this with a start button and have nothing on the column. (Im considering leaving the indicators and light switch on the column purely for driving convenience).

Hidden switches that immobilise (eg) fuel pump relay are always hard to find. Yes they can be operated with the engine running but the SVA man would have to find / know about it first. I once saw a small push button fitted to the underside of a wing mirror. Heard about them fitted behind soft head linings. Or just pull out the fuse when you leave it parked up anywhere.
