There are cars out there that have clear front indicators from the factory. My old M3 was one. rovers??

I think the regulation is that they are correctly marked and display the correct colour. i cant remember reading in the manual that the covers had to have the correct colour. Having said this i have decided to play safe with my rear lights and use the std coloured covers and replace with clear or smoked later (im using the S3 landrover lucas style round ones at the rear. Smoked lenses are very cheap. Problem is no-one seems to stock the indicator lamps and i have had some on back order with britpart for over 8 weeks now!)

I passed s.va. with clear lenses front and back, but the lights were E marked. Side indicators were also clear but not E marked. I'm sure everything doesn't have to be E marked, but has to conform to same critera as E marked ones, i.e radius etc
