Buying engine off ebay - SVA implications

If I were to buy an engine on it's own off ebay or indeed off a private seller elsewhere, what would the SVA implications be? Do I need some sort of record of the car the engine came from or would just a print out of the ebay transaction be enough?

Thanks,
Bill

With ford engines you can write a letter to ford with the engine number and they will send you a headed letter with the engine age.
This is all the proof that the SVA inspector requires.

Thanks for quick reply. I'm probably going to go down the ford route so that's exactly what I need to know.

Thanks again,
Bill

If you are going for an age related/single donor car don't declare the donor scrapped but keep it on sorn. You can then fit the engine to it, inform DVLA of the engine change and get an ammended logbook. Stays a single donor car!

Proof of engine age is only needed for SVA if you have a pre 95 engine and don't want to do a cat test. Otherwise they will assume that a cat test is needed.

For registration, a copy of the engine number and a printout of the eBay transaction would help.

I had not got an eBay printout or engine number and the DVLA didn't like it. A lot of persistance persuaded them to give me a registration number eventually.

Iwrote to ford and they confirmed the date the engine was fitted into a car.

Dusty - i was going to that but didnt get round to it. DVLA did a home inspection for me, i told the inspector exactly what i'd done (ie didnt use actual donor engine but did use another similar engine from similar aged Sierra) and they were Ok with that and accepted log book as the receipt. They commented that engine numbers often dont tie up on old donor cars. Of course my local office seems to be one of the most helpful in the country so others might be more jobsworth.

Also worth noting that DVLA wont issue a Q if they can help it. It causes them and the police trouble in the future if car gets stolen etc (allegedly).
