cable ties

Hi all, whats the gen on cable ties and when to use them, i,e, can the loom be cable tied around the chassis rails? can my chrome cooling tube be tied to secure ect.

Knowing that brake/fuel pipes need to be "P" clipped could it be said the its safe to use the cable tie to secure most other items, as its a lot easier to cut and re-adjust a cable tie than a "P" clip.

Thanks

I used cable tie saddles with a self tapper to secure my loom which was also covered in conduit.

Bear in mind that you wond be able to put a panel over where the cable tie is if you secure your loom to the chassis.

But isn't that how Caterham do it ? Have a look at their display next time you go to a show , you can see the bulges where the cable ties are. May not be that way on completed cars , but ?

I riveted the cable tie bases to the chassis rails, then cable tied the cables within conduit

I would use rivet fixed saddles as easy to do and far better practice as the tie applys equal presure around the cables it is holding rather than squash the top few and poss cause the insulation to be worn through. Use rubber lined "P" clips for the cooling tube again far neater and stronger.

All my cables were run in conduit. I used the cable ties that have the xmas tree fixing. Passed no problem. These ties help to space pipes and cables away from chassis to avoid contact. In some areas i cable tied direct to chassis but again added conduit or tubing to avoid chaffing.

Just think what could go wrong and design it out.

Another tip - dont run anything under the exhaust manifold. All my bits on that side were run away from heat, never under or over it. (Easy on a Pinto cos heat source is on near side).
