mot pass/fail ????

M.O.T tested yesterday and passed ..er no failed...under section 001.... Front and rear registration plate missing.

As this is pre s.v.a how can I have number plates.

I was only talking (arguing) about this yesterday to old man and woundered how people got on with pre SVA MOT's.

Can't help tho, don't know the answer

Been over a year since I finished my car but I had no problems passing an MOT before getting the car registered (so no plates). Even the two trafic officers who stopped me on the way to the MOT let me carry on as I had a pre-arranged appointment

I can only guess the rules have been changed again since?

They used to do it using the chassis number.

Yep...no plates required.

MOT is certificate of roadworthiness and number plates are irrelevant.

They should just put VIN number on the ticket and a note that plates are not fitted/available

Do you actually need an MOT?
I thought that you had 3 years after sva before you had to get one if the car is a new build.

no you dont, but it's generally thought of as a good shake down before heading off to SVA. Also some post office staff get very confused with a 10 year old reg. not needing a MOT. For 35 quid it's not worth the hassle.

I'd say for £35 it is VERY worth the hassle!

Build your own Sportscar for £285 does'nt have quite the same ring does it?

Wifies car 03 clio failed for a delaminated plate ( I argued it should be replaced under the 3 year warranty) So I organised a new plate from the local motor factor and she took the car back for recheck on the same day(needed 2 tyres as well ( debatable again)) the new plate was in the boot and they passed it without the plate being fitted (go figure)
They also tried to charge for 2 tests but she was having none of it and only paid for 1.
It's like all government type stuff from judges to wheelie bin collectors nothing is consistent across the whole country
Rant over I am away to rip the arms off of my teddy now

Hmmmm

Interesting point. An unregistered car doesn't require plates, but would probably fail on not having a light to illuminate the non existing number plate.

There is no way that I am going to pay for an mot on top of sva, if I don't have to.
Surely the sva would fail your car if there was anything wrong with it?

Not always true. There are some things the sva tests that the mot doesn't and vice versa. Ie for the sva the suspension bolts etc have to be there, but aren't checked for tightness (or shouldn't be) however for the mot they are. Same applies to the horn I think. Don't need one for sva, do for mot.

It's 3 MOTS if you have the first one so that's 3x£35 = £105 probably more since they will stick the prices up I expect, well worth avoiding if you trust your own mechanic skills.

If you trust the skills of some hairy arsed MOT inspector over your own don't ever offer me a lift
In my experience most (NOT ALL) MOT inspectors are shite This has been proved many, many times by various consumer groups over the years.

Sits back and waits for the torrent of abuse!!!!

I trust my building skills.
I have checked every nut, bolt & washer 3 times. I even have safety washers on my rod ends incase the pop out. I ordered them from the USA because we do not sell or use them in the UK
The main thing for me is that the brakes work. They are tested on the SVA.

NOT TRUE

I was forced to get an MOT by DVLA but have since re-taxed the car online and did not require a new MOT cert.

cnat agree about the "hairy arsed mot testers" as i now wear a belt to keep my trousers up!

the test is a minimum safety requirement for road vehicles and most of the regs can be interpreted but it would help if vosa could stop changing things

the latest load of toss is the ATL lane which is being pushed onto test centres regardless of the cost of upgrading ,and since the computer system the turnover of most test stations has gone up so vosa want to charge a £3 tax on all tests to cream a bit more off for themselves.

from what i can gather the whole test is being brought into line with other eu countries so we could have to use resonance test gear to test shock absorbers as well
