Getting a VIN number

This should be an easy one - I'm starting down the "getting it on the road" trail & it seems to me the first thing I need is a VIN number. Whether I make one up or DVLA do, I don't care, but what form do I use & where do I get it from? I downloaded the "627" form but that makes no mention of VIN and asks for a reg. number!
thanks
Bob
PS I got the V55 forms but they look like they get filled in AFTER SVA

I spoke to DVLA Swansea, who said send a letter off to my local office, requesting a VIN number (and proposing my own if i wanted: 9 - 17; alphanumeric; no Q, I, or Z).

I sent it yesterday, saying I didn't mind whether I got my suggestions or not, and asking for the local guy's contact details to (hopefully) make the rest a bit easier!

Hope that helps,
Stu

Cheers fellas,
I posted here after half an hour not getting past the stupid menus on the automatic phone machine at dvla. I'll compose the letter & include the v627 form & try to find out who to send it to tomorrow... I'm not very hopeful....
cheers
Bob
