Does anybody know if the old fashion type silver on black are legal on a Q plate

I don't. think so.
Silver on black plates are only legal on cars constructed before 01.01.73 according to DVLA site.

bugger thought I might get away with it cos you cant tell the age of the car from the reg,bit like you only needing the visual smoke check for the
MOT.

MOT won't car but Mr plod will; there are many cars out there with illegal plates; black/silver when they sholdn;t be or using illegal or too
small letters/fonts.

Must admit it really ticks me off, people f**king about with number plates just to make them read something like their name. I'm yet to hear of
someone who has been done for it.

I know quite a few people who have been pulled by the police and told to alter their registration plates to the correct spec or otherwise face a hefty
fine. They usually comply once they've been warned but you still see loads of illegal ones about
