sva and mots
heres a copy of an email i got from the dvla i have removed the names and numbers as i'm sure he dosnt want that given out on the web
Quote
Good morning
I can issue a Local office chassis number once ive had a look at the
vehicle and had a brief chat with you regarding the build, ie did you
use a donor vehicle or a mixture of components from different vehicles
also have a quick look at any receipts etc.
Once ive issued you with a letter with the chassis number you can then
apply for your SVA.
Because you will have a SVA pass certificate there is no need for a mot
for 1st registration purposes.
I can then get the vehicle registered tax disc issued etc
What area are you in as im doing outside inspections in the Cambridge
area on 9th Jan
There are a few more points which I can explain (help you fill out the
forms etc) when I come to look at the vehicle
xxxxxxxxx
Inspection Officer
Peterborough Lo
end
so if anyone has any question you need answers to let me know and i'll ask when he comes out to meet me

Hi Graham, is that the bloke i gave you the details for? He told me something different, he issued me with a chassis number through the post after i
sent him the relevant forms, which i now have to get verified by a local garage and get them to stamp the letter and send it back to him.
Saying that he has been pretty helpful.

Sorry I was under the impression that I just made up a number. Why's he coming over to do that?
Another thing is do I have to get the police round to look at the car. I had to do this with the buggy, they hadn't a clue when they came and
just looked at some receipts I had and went off.
What I’m really missing is a step-by-step guide to how to proceed, is there one already???
Come to think of it I don't have many receipts for this car as it 's mostly just bits and pieces I've gathered from friends over the
years...

some places let you make up your own number, others dont. If you really want your own, do it and act confident, they might not argue.

I made my own vin number and used one of those vin checker websites to see if it existed.
At sva (Mitcham) they just wrote it down.
I had to wait for the wimbledon dvla to come over a few days later to see what the car was made from. The next day I went to the wimbledon office and
picked up my tax and reg.

As Joel says, some let you make up your own number, some don't. Mine was Maidstone, and I wrote to them a pretty please letter saying here is
the number I want, is that OK? and they wrote back saying "fine". I had my inspection after SVA, and they looked at the number stamped on
the chassis and that was about it. Went inside and 10 minutes later had a tax disc and paperwork to allow me to get some plates!

It's best to check with your local DVLA office (and then not move areas!!). Sometimes the police give you a number / do an inspection, sometimes
the DVLA do, sometimes they just tell you to make one up...
AFAIR they can't inforce a particular chassis number on you. Elstree + Borehamwood DVLA decided that they would have liked to have given me my
chassis number but seeing as I'd passed SVA based upon a number I made up there's basically F all they can do other than winge. After all,
when you import a car you usually just SVA it and register on the original chassis no...
You can, of course, use their lack of consistent rule interpretation against them!! When they were winging about my chassis number being of my
choosing, I simply explained that I started the built up in Nottingham (which is true) and that different DVLA offices gave differing opinions on
chassis numbers. It would be untrue if I said I checked with Nottingham DVLA before making up my chassis number- which is why I didn't do it.
Not my fault if my local DVLA office were under the impression I'd been told by Nottingham to make up the number.... I hadn't lied and
they sure as hell were'nt going to check!!!
