You only get a plate for the year of registration if the car uses mainly new parts, i.e. you aren't using a donor car.

If at least two major components comes from your donor (e.g. engine, transmision, steering, suspension etc.) you will be eligible for an age related plate, i.e. same year as donors, but not the actual donor plate.

Anything else will get a Q plate, which some may look down on, but has a useful advantage in that it won't be subject to any emissions tests at MOT time, other than visible smoke.

Different vro offices have different views.
For a brand new Reg you need to have reciepts for everything and all needs to be brand new, except you can have one reconditioned part. Most people choose the engine.
For an age related plate, there is a points system which counts how many parts you use from the donor.
You need 8 points for an age related plate.
Engine 1, transmission 1, brakes 1 etc.
You will find that you do not have enough points generally, except there is a loop hole.
A brand new manufacturers chassis counts as 5 points.
All you need to do is provide a reciept for brand new steel and call yourself the manufacturer.
That is what I did and I got an age related plate.

It would appear that Nitram38 took a different route to register his vehicle than most other people on here. The points system described above is for registering a Radically Altered Vehicle, whereas most people on here building sevens and suchlike will register their vehicles in accordance with Kit Conversion requirements as follows;

The 'Built Up Vehicle Inspection Report' V627/1, list major components for a car as;

Chassis/Body Shell
Axles
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine
Suspension (front and back)

You only need to use 2 of the above to qualify for an age related plate, although the more you use, the better chance you have. We have a motorbike engine fitted and listed the Axles, Transmission and Steering Assembly from the Sierra.

Good enough for an age related plate

Phil
