SVA Refusal to Test @ Newcastle!
Well I guess today qualifies me to recount my version of SVA day down the pub after todays little adventure....!
Had SVA booked for 8am this morning so after some last minute tinkering (till stupid o clock this morning more like) we set off for the 5 mile drive
to the SVA centre, me in the locost - SWIMBO in the CL 55 AMG safety car, snap-on tools warming next to the flasks of hot coffee....or something like
that....
Having driven all of 1mile down the road, I looked like Id dived in a muddy lake but the car was doing well and all thoughts of the prop bolts coming
loose and chopping my ankles off were put out of mind for the time being...
Was pleasantly surprised by the first 3ish miles which passed without problem - But then about 1 mile away from the test centre it stalled and wouldnt
re-start.
Battery was flat but was tip-top when we left so Im guessing its the regulator....
Quick jump from the safety car and we get to the SVA centre hoping to talk my way out of the minor issue relating to it not actually working without
being attached to a mondeo with jump leads.
There must be some anti-mondeo small print somewhere since his line was pretty firm - it doesnt start under its own power - he wont test it.
He said that since I was there he wouldnt test it but he would have a quick look over it for me to spot anything that needs sorting out before the
"actual" SVA test!
Oh no - not another one!!? It hasnt even failed yet!!
SWIMBO summed it up once we'd made it back to the ranch, "At least it wasnt refused on the grounds of "the vehicle is in such a
condition that a proper examination would involve a danger of injury"!"
Yeah exactly - its virtually a pass!!

I suppose you could have fitted the merc battery in the locost ? Would probalby have failed on not being secured or something but the rest would have
been done.
Must be pretty annoying. put voltmeter across batery when runining - it is not someting stupid like the charge lamp not connected or blown?
(if you were more local, I could uave borrowed you an laternator)

Too fussy! So it needs a jump at every set of traffic lights....whats the big deal?!
He found a few sharp edges which werent quite covered up with the edge trim and also he failed loads of fixings for them not having locking washers
under the bolt heads....
Apparently if I cant prove that I have used a nylocs or stud lock he would want to see spring washers under the bolt heads.
Another trip to the bolt place then - I realised the other day I am actually on first name terms with them - I think I need to get out more!
Is it 7.30pm at the Church Mouse tonight then Mike?

Oh and another thing - my steering column failed - well I say failed, I mean looked like it might fail(!) because it wouldnt collapse enough...
I have about 1" of slide in the traingular part of the column between the rack and bulkhead (where there is a bush and therefore no more
sliding).
I asked how much slideability (I was getting technical at this point) I needed - he said there was no length specified!
He suggested shortening my column and re-welding it but I have to leave a solid insert showing in between the cut tube ends to prove it wasnt just
welded up tube....
Sounds like a recipe for an SVA pass but sleepless nights to me!
Wheres this Stevie Wonder SVA station? Get me booked in!!

Well, I have lost my test fee but can apply for a refund of 2/3 of it through VOSA.
Another £150 is payable to book again.
Its expensive this locosting isnt it?!

If he looked round it and saw things that would fail then you'd have had to have a second test anyway.

Wouldn't you want spring washers under the nuts, rather than the bolt heads? Or am I just hopeless ?

Don't we all from time to time!
Unlucky. When we tested my mates MK we had to tow it away as the clutch cable snapped on the speedo test, but he still passed it.

Hard luck mate! That is a bit rough
Just a note, the SVA test is now £158 so don't foget the extra £8 or you will get a letter asking for it and have a further delay getting the
retest...

Please dont be too publicly critical of the SVA inspectors. Im sure they are silent members on here. Newcastle is strict enough without public
condemnation and us Northerners dont have many other places local we can go.
I have to say i found him to be strict but fair. We had good constructive comments about how to solve my fail points which led to a good pass 2nd time
around.

That's a complete opposite of what happened to me at Nottingham, I drove the buggy off the trailer & to the doors, left it running but then
it stopped & wouldn't start again. Later found it turned out to be the points that had closed, but they tested everything else that could be
without the engine running. Then between us we worked out it was the points & they allowed me 5 minutes to sort them out & finished the rest
of the test.
