fuel cut-off?

Is it a legal requirement (SVA) to have have a fuel cut-off switch fitted with carbs/electric fuel pump?

I cant recall seeing it.

But consider your own safety. A cut off impact switch can be easily wired to the coil of the fuel pump relay.

Having a bad accident with a ruptured fuel line and 4 litres or so a minute pumping on the floor isnt gonna get a big crowd of people to pull you from the car.....!

Good point Steve.

Dunkan,

You can get a fuel cut off switch from any Sierra post '91. It is located in the boot in the spare wheel well. Two pozidrive screws later and it's yours. Take the mounting bracket too. A scrappy will probably only charge a fiver for it (oh, and cut the connector off the loom so you can wire it into your car.)

Cheers

i heard/read somewhere that the best place to wire the cut off is using the oil pressure switch. cant remember where, or why, but i remember it making sense at the time.

its not that simple

no oil pressure at start up, so the fuel pump wont prime.

My efi system - granada based - runs the pump for a couple secs at key on, then stops. It then only starts once it senses engine run.

If you use the oil switch, the engine of a crashed car will stall, and the switch will turn of the pump. A metro turbo does this. However, the pump wont run at engine start time unless you have a 'primer timer'.

an impact switch is much easier! Just wire it to the fuel pump relay coil. I wouldnt do it direct to the pump - its fused at 20A so a bit current hungry I guess
