SVA steering column set-up

SVA steering column set-up

I think I might be ok on this one?

A universal joint connecting the steering rack to the bottom rod
Then another universal joint connected to the top rod.

I have a removable steering wheel, will that satisfy as an ant-theft device? It’s taken off with a key.

The column looks OK as it can bend out of harm's way instead of pushing straigh back at your chest.

Other people have had trouble with removable steering wheels, but as long as it can be locked on and not accidentally be removed while underway, you may be OK

That should be fine.

I'm not sure the key'ed wheel will qualify for an immobiliser, as it wouldn't stop someone driving the car away, just stop them from steering it.

Your second form of immobilisation is very simple though - just fit a ON/OFF toggle switch in the positive side of your fuel pump wiring.

i was going to fit a battery cut off switch will that do or do i need the on/off toggle switch too?

Regarding the removable steering wheel, You cannot do better than to give your local SVA tester a telephone call. When I wanted to check whether a master cut-off switch would be acceptable as a second immobiliser I rang our local man and not only did he confirm that it would be okay, he said to ring whenever I had a query. So really, very helpful and I am sure this will be the same with your local station.

While on the telephone you could also ask him about your steering. During the Phoenix SVA, he wanted to see that the column was deformable. The Sierra has a convoluted section just forward of the steering wheel as well as a sliding joint and the two links are angled as in your drawing.

So to summarise, I would say in the light of my limited experience, be guided by your local SVA Tester whenever you have any queries because he and only he can give the definitive answer and if you have done everything to his liking he cannot fail you.

Your battery switch will be fine. In fact I was told that this being under the bonnet would be better than the scuttle mounted switch that I had fitted.
