I went with the man who advertises in the kit car mags and he has helped me fill in the forms and we made up and stamped our own chassis number and
put it on the forms. I was under the same impression as you and thought
the local dvla place at sidcup would do this, but they never replied when i initally asked them. Hope he has it right.

Conrod, I made my own 17 digit one within the rules of no Q's, I's etc and I used a vin checker online (do a search on google for hpi
check).
I put it on the chassis and the sva forms. No problems registering and no hassle from the dvla.

I agree. I wrote to Maidstone DVLA asking if my selected VIN was OK and didn't hear back so I called.

Mine was confirmed within a few hours. I posted a letter off to Stockton one night (letter to ask general Q's and propose a number) and recieved
a call back from Kelly the next day who confirmed it was Ok to use. This then meant i had her office number which came in useful after registering
when Swansea made some mistakes.

Conrod,
You doing it at Wimbledon?
I just made mine up with them.
Does Harsha Vadgam still work there? She was my case officer and was really, really helpful. Did everything the way I expected it to be done... ie.
correctly!
I initially just faxed them saying I was building an 'amateur built kit car' and was the following chassis number acceptable.... blah
blah. Went fine from there.
Cheers,
James
