mini shell, new engine, CAT rquired?
I'm still a little confused!
originally when i started my project i was going to put a 2000 1.8 VTi Honda engine into my 1980 mini shell. Without an SVA.
many of you on here have rightly pointed out that as I'm modifying the shell so much that i should SVA it (IVA by the time i finish!)
As i understood it at the time a MOT would be based on the year of the shell not the engine and therefore i would not require a CAT on the exhaust
system.
My shell is still registered, just SORN.
I was going to send in the registration documents to change the engine size and ID number.
My question is, do i need a CAT?
Will the car be re-registered?

I always understood that if you re-engine a car, all the rest stays the same.

have you seen how much he has re engineered the car.
I think that you will not get away with the MOT route and will require an SVA. with the engine you have in now you will need a Cat.
for no SVA you need an unmodified shell. or a total of 8 points from the list. ie new shell and old running gear or un modified shell and new running
gear.

considering I saw a Golf that ended up with a Q plate due to the owner converting it to gullwing doors. I think your chances of using that original
reg are zero.

as mr whippy says^^^^. i'm not trying to rain on your parade but the MOT route is un realistic
it's like my mates westfield which was registared as a MK2 escort.
i realy think you should be thinking the SVA all the time with evrey thing you do.
by the way it looks a great project

These guys get away with just an MOT, so don't worry about it- theres one that has even taken a mini and placed a front engine RWD XE engine in
their mini.

you could yse one and then take it off afterwards could'nt you?

From my personal experience being too honest with the DVLA is just asking for trouble; give them the bare minimum of details and nothing more, they
just seem to be desperate to just give you a bad day. As for this unmodified chassis cr@p I don’t buy it, my buggy is still down as a beetle yet all
that remains of the original chassis is the central backbone, both floor pans are custom things not bearing the least bit of resemblance to the VW
ones and not once has this been brought up as an issue, infact the backbone is about the only remaining part from the original car now
Find an easy test centre, (they do vary, my local one lets me help with the test, you should see how hard I press on the brakes ) and just chuck
it through, bet you get a certificate.
