Brake lines, tie rods and steering columns

OK, I've heard some unsettling information which may just be rumour or someone not knowing what they're talking about.

Apparantly you can't weld tie rods and steering columns (but some kind of threaded extension is acceptable)

And recently that you can't fabricate your own brake lines - that HAS to be nonsense, surely?!

Well my Tiger steering column is extended by welding so it better not be right. Hows an SVA tester supposed to know who has made up a brake line if it has been done properly?? Sounds like a load of complete bowlocks to me!!

Steering columns can be welded and many are/need to be.

Tie rods can't be welded.

There is a detail on flexible brake lines where you have to prove they have the correct olive in them if you've made your own from fittings and pipe. Some testers are harder than others, but taking a fitting and showing them how it's been constructed has worked for some.

Crimped ones, which you can't make at home without the correct (£££) tooling, are considered ok.
