DONOR CAR

DOES ANYONE KNOW JUST HOW MUCH OF THE DONOR CAR HAS TO BE USED WHEN BUILDING A KIT CAR BEFORE IT GETS ISSUED WITH A 'Q' PLATE - AS IVE SEEN BIKE ENGINED CARS OUT THERE NOT ON A 'Q', AND WAS WONDERING WHAT EXACTLY IS NEEDED FROM THE ORIGINAL CAR

Tom,

It's done on a "points" system, which has been described on here a few times. Try using "search", and see what pops up.

But to give you an idea, 4 of 5 main area are needed IIRC. Chassis (wont be used), suspension (wont be used) engine, gearbox, axle make up the main bits.

Another good iea is speaking to DVLA (or looking a their website) at their FAQ's. Sure it'll be in there!!

By the way, I've got a Q, and its never been a problem - once inside don't see it!!! Good luck with the build.

CHEERS MARK, I THOUGHT 'Q' PLATED CARS WERE A BUGGER TO SELL ON (NOT THAT IM GOING TO SELL MINE {NEED TO BUILD IT FIRST THOUGH!!})

actually its not a points system for a locost

if that applied to a locost you wouldnt get enougth points.

If you can prove the chassis is new, - ie a kit or the receipts for the steel you bought to make it - and you have the donor V5 and used the gearbox and engine from it, you tend to get an age related plate.

This case is shown on the dvla site, but doesnt make it clear it applied to locosts. I have seen the above statement made by several people who have registered cars and it seems to universally be the case...
