IVA fuel tank protection requirements
Just looking through the IVA manual and I doubt my Indy with the fuel tank already in place would have much luck passing the rear impact into
petrol tank part of the test. Currently the only thing rearward of the tank is the mounting rail for the rear panel an dthe panel itself.
Not sure how best to sort this. I was thinking of making a second rail to go above the tank and a couple of vertical pieces into the rear panel
mounting rail or do we think IVA man will want to see a solid panel? The rules not very clear IMO.

i think a 2nd rail with vertical bars will be fine. its got to be stronger than a sheet of steel.
thats how mine is anyway

Hope I haven't misinterpreted - could this be done by a horizontal bar between roll bar supports (mine will go into the rear corners)?
If it isn't broke, fix it until it is

9.
Fuel Tanks must be positioned so as not to be vulnerable to damage from protruding parts or sharp edges in the event of a front or rear impact.
is all it says... hmmm. a bit vague really.
steel plate could be punctured, and additional bars could bend, break and poke sharp edges at the tank...

just thining, has anyone actually failed IVA on fuel tank protection yet?
just thinking, it could mean as long as you've got no corners of brackets pointing right at the tank, or long bolts through the chassis pointing
at it then it might be fine?
i mean, you you get hit hard enough it will burst the tank, no matter what you do to it

This did atract some discussion a while back and I think we came to the conclusion that as long as there were no 'protruding parts or sharp
edges' on your vehicle you were OK. I guess this till needs testing by IVA test itself - anyone here had this examined under IVA rules yet??

I've got a feeling it won't be a problem but once the rear panel is on I really don't want to have to take it off again!!!

No I don't think I have. Basically the bottom of the tank is "protected" if you can call it that by the rear rail but the top rear
most edge has nothing rearward of it other than the fibreglass panel.

from what the other thread said about the iva man, that should be alright, as long as you've not got any bolts through the rear panel

i can see your concerns, but given there's no part of your car behind it that would cause damage it should be fine i think.
my car as 3 horizontal tubes accross the back, with vertical tubes, all 2" round, so i've got no worries coz i'm covered all round,
but i should think yours will be fine

Mine is bassed on a gts and the book. So no rear metal work.
Ive modified mine this week end as I dont want to have to take the panel of once glued on.
Does any one feel I need to brace it forward to the rear bulk head for the iva ?

Adding tubes can't hurt, but they're not going to stop any protruding things from another vehicle hitting the tank in an impact (other
than the highly unlikely direct hit to one of the bars).
How long until the first IVA inspector decides you need a 4mm steel plate there. That'll make a loud clang when it falls off on the way home
