To Sorn or not?

Having just bought a new donor and I've just received the log book for it.

The tax on the screen ran out in sept 05. Its been standing since then.

Do I need to sorn it or will the lack of tax just carry on??

Steve.

Sorn it now - if the system sends you an automatic fine, it'll be too late.

SORN

I gave my donor away to a friend who was building a cobra once I hd pinched the axle, I had it SORN the minute I got it.

He took a further year to finish, the plate is now with his car following SVA but three months after is was registered to his car I got a letter notifying me of a fine for tax evasion.

I wrote to them, got a condesending letter back saying in this instance they would let me off ... FFS, the Cobra was taxed and registered just the month before.

Thanks chaps, just done it but a warning popped up saying there was a gap, its an offence and a fine will be levied, the reg keeper would be contacted regarding this matter.

Bastards! Just got the book back this morning!

Any new owner must re-SORN. It doesn't carry over from one owner to another and is also location specific.

If it hasn't been SORN'd in the past it's not your problem. But if you don't immediately SORN it now it could all become your problem IE do it ASAP!

Id like to think that if they did come back to you the fact that the logbook was only just put in your name and your Sorn'd it straight away would go in your favour. Do you have a dated reciept from the previous owner too? or at least a dated advert from when you bought it (ebay confirmation etc). Im pretty sure all of these things will prove you arent negligent. Only downer is we know how erroneous DVLA can be but the dated paperwork should takke the blame from you.
