Can I drive to dvla inspection with trade plates?
Eh up,
Just done a search and it's thrown up all sorts of legal questions.
Basically I was wonderin if I can drive to my inspection with trade plates on? It's passed sva and also insured, I thought the only reason you
can't normally do it is due to lack of tax, which a trade plate covers.
Also found in a search that someone had email confirmation from dvla that it was ok to drive there anyway.
Very confusing, try to avoid hiring a trailer for a 25 minute journey, and 5 minute inspection!!
Cheers,
Martin
who says you can't drive a kit car when you're 6'5"?

Can't give you the answer you are looking for but whilst I was at SVA someone rung up to ask if it was OK to drive to SVA on trade plates and
was told it wouldn't be . On the other hand I was told by Peterborough DVLA it was OK to drive to inspection.

driving to the test is not a problem as long as you hold appropriate 3rd party insurance and your car is deemed roadworthy and you take it to the
nearest tesing station and back via a direct route.
Shouldthinktrade plate wouldn't be a problem as long as you are licenced to use the plate ie not borrowing from a mate.

My understanding is that a car must display a valid tax disc when on the road with the single exception of travelling to & from a pre-booked
MoT/SVA/IVA test.
DVLA inspection is not an MoT/SVA/IVA test.
Don't know about trade plates myself, but
VTL301/1 gives more info. I've
always thought that trade plates are a sort of 'floating' tax disc.

Drove mine to Portsmouth DVLA for the inspection, and nothing was said, apart from they wanted to change the vin number, but had already had this
agreed by them previously, so that didn't happen. :-) Best thing is to ring them and find out. Cheers Ray

It's not up to the DVLA. Their inspection is not an MoT/SVA/IVA test. They need to look at the car - how it gets there is the owner's
concern. If you choose to drive an untaxed car and get nabbed by the law then you take the consequences. They do offer home inspection...

DVLA Manchester advised me to drive it to them on trade plates after I explained that I was insured, just hadn't got a tax disc.

I visited the Notts DVLA today.
I asked them the question, can you drive there. They answer was absolutly not. You can drive to a mandatory test, e.g. MOT or IVA but the DVLA process
is an inspection, not test of the vechicle so that get out clause does not apply.
