Insurance

I am very knew to the whole kit car scene, and am only 19. I have done some research, and i fancy an MK Indy as a starter.
Is this a good starter build (with motorcyle engine)?
What is insurance like?

MK is a very good kit. Lots of back up from factory and people on this forum. Other makes mentioned on this board like GTS and Leugo also worth checking out. Tiger also OK but some negative comments. Insurance is low for "older" driver, I pay £180 fully comp on a 2ltr 3000 miles a year. Might be worth getting some quotes from companies advertising in kit mags. I suspect a bike engine might be a bit heavy insurance wise for a young driver. Why not start with a 1300 Ford or Vauxhall car engine, you will still be getting 150-160BHP per ton performance which is still very fast, then upgrade later to something bigger. Cost wise you could start off with a small Pinto and upgrade to 2ltr latter for very little cost. Half the fun of these cars is getting the "feel" correct, you'll learn more about car design and theory building one of these then you'll ever by trying to upgrade a Nova!

Hi Chaz,

I've been phoning around some companies and found some are only interested in capacity and didn't seem bothered that it was a bike engine. got quoted £126 comp, with no no claims and 3 points that was with Graham Sykes.
I am an old fart though.

I've heard of some horrific stories of insurance for younger drivers... if they can get it at all for a BEC. I'd get some idea BEFORE starting to build with a bike engine. IMHO

Sound advice...
Would be torture to finish your dream car and not be able to drive it.

i'm 23 and had great problems finding a quote for a BEC, most places require you to be at least 25 for a BEC, but that was with a zx9. i agree with the 1300cc option, still bloody fast but should be respectible to insure and is easily upgradable in the future.
