Failed SVA at Exeter
Well it failed....but all the things I had worried about passed...
The car self centred, the noise was OK (will a little help from the examiner), the brake bias bar passed on both limits, all radii were OK,even the
push bike speedo passed.
Failed on.
A) I had covered and padded the Mountney steeing wheel but failed as the boss was not collapsible??????
B) I should have checked I know, but I had assumed that the seat belt anchorages on the tiger would be OK.
The seat has a very thin cusion. The two harness mounts were too low (just) but the mount in the roll bar for a 3 point diagonal belt is OK. So I
either use a 3 point belt or raise the anchorages by welding a horizontal bar to the roll bar and welding in tubes.
3) couple of cable ties under the dash (2 second job)
4) Front indicators too far in (Imeasured from the outter face of the front wheels, should have been the rear arches as this is the widest part) This
easy to resolve too.
5) Not enough thread through one of the suspension bolt nylocks (remove washer, job done)
6) The engine is running very lean and hence the emissions test could not be done (Fireblade engine, I shall seek help on the BEC section)
Tester was very helpful and pleasent.
only other problem ws after the 65 mile round trip the bike battery was red hot?
Again I shall seek help on The BEC section.
Otherwise not too bad a day.
Anyone help on the steeing wheel boss bit?
I could put on the sierra wheel but to be honest it looks stupid and very little room ontop of my legs.

Is it the standard boss? With a bit of rubber round it? If so it is collapsable.
But does it need to be collapsable if the column is (as a Sierra one is), and the downlink even has angle in it!
Thats three reasons why it wouldn't twat you in the face in a crash IMHO!!!

I was told and shown the manual where it has to have the angle in the column linkage, collapsible column and a collapsible boss.
My boss is the solid cast alloy type... bought from lowlocost at the Exeter Show
BTW the examiners may well have a stand at the next Exeter show, maybe sponsered by Marlin... Would be a very good idea...could see a long que at that
stand..
He raved about the 5exi that was test recently.

Are you sure that you have to have all three? I've just looked through my SVA manual and it does not say you need all three. Not got the latest
updates though.
I do have the collapsable boss though.

collapsable boss
Hi Steve: If its any help, I fitted a mountney collapsable boss to my MK . As Graham says they come with a rubber boot/cover.
they are available from rally design for £23.50 +VAT. Visit www.raldes.co.uk ,for picture of one . they are multifit so you can use them with most
wheels.

i will have this problem too then. My rear arches are quite far out to allow the wing mirrors some space, but the indicators are measured to the front
wheels. is it 400mm you are allowed, and is this to the outside edge of the light?

The self centring was funny as I made up a cock and bull story why the tracking was so far out. Pulled the tracking back in after the test.
The speed caibration was changed at the test. The speedo was reading well below the actual(not allowed)
Funny, I wondered why I got to Exeter so quick in the morning when I thought I was only going recording 75. This could explain also why no cars passed
me.
Couldn't help myself and touched 110 proper speed on the way home. Deep joy!

On the mountny wheel, I failed on the face having radius issue. Cut down some Tifosi nut covers and superglued to each screw on wheel mounting and
passed on Monday this week. Looks good too.

Apparently, you have to have 2 things on your steering, colapsible boss and a colapsible column or and agle of 10 degrees or more on the uj.
The edge of the Indicators have to be 400mm from the widest part of the body which is usually the rear arches.
Rules, Rules and more Rules
BTW lighting, Love the colour scheme of your car, very tasty :-)

Lightning,
What exactly did you have to do to get the car to self centre?

Made sure the upper wishbones were around the right way to get the maximum castor angle, pumped up the tyres and toed out the tracking to about 5
degrees.
This did the job to the satisfaction of the tester. He drove it in figure of 8's. He drove it fast around the test centre too, to make sure it
drove OK. I was in the passenger seat. Its supprisingly scarey when your not in control. Also appears a lot faster.
