registering a fibreglass mini using mgf doner

hi... im using a fra mini shell (fibreglass) made by tdk racing. and a single mgf as a donor car.

after LOADS of reading up.. im still VERY confused by this whole system

the car will be : fra shell which will be basically, a shell attached to the rollcage, and the rollcage holding the front subframe containing the std mgf engine and then a rear beam assembly at the rear of the cage.

all parts except the beam and radius arms will be from the mgf, including seats.. everything.

i really really dont want a q plate! not due to stigma.. but due to the sheer amount of time iv spent getting all the parts refurbed and the cost of the shell/cage!

can someone please advise me? iv even try'd ACE but they never got back to me!

posted on here, as theres alot more experience than the mini forums!

my theory is:

subframes- mgf
engine- mgf
steering- mgf
wiring/other- mgf

shell- new but no cert (will have a recipt tho)
rollcage- own design, made by me
wheels- mini fitment

like i say... i could really do with a hand on this one! even the dvla office wouldnt advise me in english.. they wanted me to "interpret" the statement!

Pretty sure that would be a 'Q' plate...

because im changing the shell?

wondered how it worked because you guys seem to register with age related using a single doner and self built chassis.

I would say it would get an age-related plate.

You've done nothing different to thousands of people on here who've bought a LSIS chassis and stripped a Sierra to take the bits from and most have got an age-related plate.

Look at 'Kit Conversions'.

Be aware that there *are* advantages to having a 'Q' plate... easier emmissions test!

Cheers,
James

I would say it's an age related. Certainly you are using enough bits from a single donor not to get a Q, you may even be able to avoid IVA if you convince VSO/DVLA it's a rebody using the original chassis.

Don't know how you could reasonably claim that a fibreglass mini shel is the same as a steel MGF???

Also, I am interested to see that "all parts except the beam and radius arms will be from the mgf" - does that mean that you a able to use the MGF rear subframe in the fornt of the mini, or are you making it mid-rear engined?

I've always fancied doing a fibreglass classic mini with something other than A series engine, so go on, post some pictures or us!

The MGF was a reworked Metro this is turning MGF back into a Mini shaped Metro --- irony.

I think as the shell was changed (for one that was not a direct replacement of the orginal design) you need an IVA, this will not stop you getting an age related plate (or it might depends on the components you have used from the old "car", also all of this is done on a points system (based on what you have changed from the orginal "car".. Tricky one you need to get this correct else if you have an accident the insurance companies maybecome intreasted in how not to pay out..

I think there's a completed one in the current issue of the Mini magazine published by Future Publishing.

Depends on what the 'chassis' is. I would suspect the chassis is going to be the 'rollcage' and you have made this yourself, meaning you cant quallify for the below.

Kit Conversions
This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body, chassis or monocoque bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration certificate.

A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major components are used. If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis or bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An IVA, ESVA, SVA or MSVA test will be required to register the vehicle.

Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an IVA, ESVA, SVA or MSVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.

However, some have stated before they have been given age related on their self built chassis.

Using that many parts from the mgf you would be able to apply for an age related plate. Make sure you have the V5 for the mgf, and chassis plate with you when you go to register it. Pictures of the mgf before, during and after will also help. This is after you have had it IVA'd of course.

I think I realise what you meant in your post the other day now.

If you build the chassis yourself you count as a specialist kit manufacturer. There is no other option for them to choose. Soooo many Locosts have got age-related plates this must be the case. The age-relatedness is nothing to do with who actually built the chassis, it's down to the source of the donor parts.

Cheers,
James
