Windscreen - Heads-up!
Just read a thread from one of my fellow local Kit Car club members regarding windscreens and the IVA.
He found out that apparently anyone putting their car in for IVA before 29/04/2013 should be aware that there is a consession for Amateur built cars
in that the windscreen, and all safety glass does not have to be "E" marked. If it is marked by the glass manufacturer BS857, BS857/2,
BS5282 or BSAU178 then it is acceptable for IVA purposes. He emailed VOSA to check this and got a reply confirming it.
So it appears that there is no need to present without the screen on. There is also a note added in the latest IVA manual that states the
following:
"Note 6: The fitting of window ‘glass’ is not mandatory but where fitted it must be assessed according to the required
standards and if it is obvious the window has been deliberately removed for the purpose of the test then the window can be considered missing.
To confirm that the window has been deliberately removed an examiner should ensure that there are no window mechanisms, runners etc. or other window
fixings that would indicate that a window should be fitted. If it is clear that, without modification, a window can be fitted then the window is to be
considered missing."
Thought it might be of interest to some on here

I saw that on another forum and its interesting, so basically if you have a wiper system fitted, and demist system they will assume the screen is
missing and fail it.
Can they be getting abit clever???

We've all been saying "leave the screen off for the IVA" for years...

Am I missing something here... I think when people say "leave off the screen until after IVA" that also mean "leave off the
wipers?"

Leave everything off - screen, wipers, washers. The idea was that it would be a bit less to test (and there are a few ways to fail on screens!). It
now looks like a builder will have to leave everything off if they want to follow this route. Or put it all on, and make sure it meets the regs.
I started with no screen, and put one on much later - and it was a struggle. It would have been much easier if I'd done it while building...

I never thought I'd say this, but I am starting to wonder whether I should be IVA'ing my car while it's only half finished. With a
bodykit going on to a seven chassis I'm tempted to submit it as a seven, and then fit the body (and probably a windscreen!) after the car is
registered.

I'd be very suprised if they don't. Most are petrol heads from what I gather so probably are just as interested in the builds as we
are?

The way I approached this, I decided I would never be happy using my car WITHOUT a screen ( just can't get my head round [no pu intended]
wearing a crash helmet in a car - its not a 4-wheeled bike! ) so, from the start of the build I planned and integrated everything required for a
screen fitment - as others have already stated, I wasn't going to IVA it in a part - finished state.
If you are going to fit a screen, do it properly and get it safety-inspected just like the rest of the car - you know it makes sense.

Slightly off topic, but this did remind me of the time I took my aeroscreened car for an MOT, I had the tester a bit stumpted, he said he could not
pass the car without a glass windscreen and associated parts. I poliety asked him to show me this in his MOT ' bible' and was unable to.
He ended up having to ring up VOSA I think it was before he would pass me. Even then he had made a note on the MOT cert that the car had no
windscreen, he said it was to protect him from me suing him for getting hit by a stone on the motorway.......
Just thought I would throw that out there.

We had a tester posting on here for many years, but he seems not to have posted in a long time now.

AFAIK because you can see over them they are not classed as a windscreen?
