Transcript of telephone conversation

I rang the DVLA local line and booked a callback for today to get my chassis number.

I was really surprised that 'Geoff' called bang on time from the Truro office.

G.' Hello Mr Allanson, I understand you need a chassis number for your kitcar, I am surprised that the kit manufacturer did not give you instructions or issue you with a number'

MA.'The car is self built so there is no manufacturer, just me and a heap of steel'

G.'When did you buy the kit?'

MA.The is no kit, I have made it all myself'

'Oh I understand, you have renovated an old kit, which one is it?' {sounds really interested}

MA. 'No, I bought steel from S J Andrews and welded it into a chassis and started from there'

Pause

Very long pause

G. 'I've never done one of these before...I'll just ask someone a minute..'

On hold for 5 minutes

G. 'As you have used the chassis from you donor, you can use the original chassis and reg number'

Eventually the position was explained

G. 'Here is your chassis number sabtvr***********, you will need an SVA test before we can allocate a reg number..'

MA. ' Can I have an age related plate {pushing luck a bit now!},

G. 'As you have used a few bit off different cars, I will have to check, but I cannot see any problem, Ford bits are Ford bits arn't they {chuckles from Geoff}, make sure you see me when you register, I will make sure I do the inspection when the times comes'

MA. 'Thanks Geoff, bloody decent of you'

G. 'You will have to show me what you did, I quite fancy one of those myself'

Result or what

By the sounds of it you can get it as soon as you have finalised you plans, I had to specify colour, donor type (but not reg - I could not remember it). Geoff is going to 'inspect ' it soon, and wants the V5 from the sierra so he can check the engine number, see my capri flavoured sierra rear axle and my cortina flavoured sierra front uprights......

The Ipswich office told me to contact them when I was around 3 or 4 months from completion, with a rolling chassis that bore some resemblence to a finished car!

They also asked the name of the car, I had not even thought of that!!, I just blurted out ALLANSON 7, thats spelt S.E.7. E.N.

So thats it, its an Allanson SE7EN, registered at DVLC and everything, just SVA to go!!

Joel, ring the Truro office, really spot on, keen and eager to help, he really showed an interest.

That's odd Joel, I phoned the Leeds office a couple of months back to get my Chassis Number.

All went well, they even phoned me back. I talked to a bloke named Paul Harrison who made an appointment to see me and my chassis after 6pm.

He called round and complimented me on my good work, checked a couple of receipts, V5 and engine number.

I also have his mobile phone number, he said to call him if I had any questions, which I have done a couple of times, once while he was on his hols .

He then went away and a couple of days later he sent me a letter that I had to take to the DVLA office when registering and the chassis number.

So it seems it really does depend on the person you deal with and not just the region.
