Good news Bad news
Are we sitting all comfy like?
Good then let me tell you a story
The good news...
A friend of mine had some Triumph Dolly Gauges/dials Smiths Classic just the thing for me 11
They didn't look brand new, but just nicely aged, and they didn't cost me a single penny.
Now my friend is well aware of IVA and said 'ere Bill what about them there beaurocraughts'
'ah simples' seez I, 'there's an exclusion zone round the steering wheel they don't have to have large radius
bezels'
So after cleaning up the dials (all sparky clean) and fitting them to the dash I went to sent my friend a copy of the regs so he can marvel at hoop
jumping gone mad
The bad news...
That's when I read it....exclusion not for open topped cars
ARRGGGGGGGGG!!!! 
Now I've had a bright idea, stroke of genius really (honest) what if I mould with silicone rubber new bezel surrounds for the dials, with a
large radius to fit over the existing, with some low tack glue that's easily removed, and remove them when I'm done with the IVA bit.
Other ideas anyone, and no I'm not about to put a lid on the car, have I missed a huge hole in my plan?

glue on a big rubber O-ring around the edges, worked for me

Personally I'd make a temporary dash board. F'ugly but would do the job. Cut out a section of it, big bit of perspex mount them behind. No
radiuses...

AFAIK the exclusion zone that was in SVA is still in IVA? No?

yep, thats correct.
i just had a quick look through the manual, couldn't find a bit that says open top cars don't have the exclusion zone behind the wheel
I though the one behind the wheel was always applicable
the part on the pillar you obviously can't have as you don't actually have a pillar
and the bit between the zone behind the wheel and the outer edge of the car was the only one that you couldn't have because of the car being
open top?
can you post the bit that says there's no exclusion zone for open tops?
I've got a full cage and roof, so no worries for me, would just help to clear up for anyone else now woried about it

Of course the exclusion zone applies to open cars. That where I stuck all my pointy and finger cutting switches and controls. Passed IVA no problem
as they were excluded. They even have a funky template at the test centre for measuring.

BenB nice idea but I have already fixed existing dash in place and really want to and change it
well apart from adding more dials
As to everyone else, thanks for the replies, as soon as I get home I'll dig out the stuff I was reading last night.

When you do, check it's an up to date IVA manual.
I seem to remember that in early drafts of the IVA manual, there was something that could be (mis)interpreted as no exclution zone for screenless
cars. It was re-writen/clarified so there still is an exclution zone in later vertions. Same as heat shild over exhausts, etc.

The good news is of cource I can still use my dials, and the idea about O rings means I can fit extra dials else where

IVA tester was happy with my fabric-covered plywood dash, where I'd routed circular recesses, into which I located my old Smiths speedo and
tacho. Mind you, some other items he wasn't quite so happy.
Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!
