VIN

Morning all,

Following on from my last Thread.

I rang the dvla and was told that to get a VIN i needed to fill out a v55/5.
The v55/5 asks for the VIN, as well as lots of other things like tax and insurance which i would assume come later in the process!!

So was I told crap? Should I just make one up and fill in the form? Should I make one up and not do the v55/5 yet? Should I leave it blank?

We had to trailer our car to Brighton DVLA offices
by appointment and their inspector had a look
checked the engine no and issued us with a vin no
within an hour.
pain to have to trailer the car down there
but otherwise great friendly service.
equally good for the registration.

I think another call to the DVLA is in order, or possibly a letter to the local one.

You can just write a letter to the local DVLA office and ask for a VIN number to be issued, explaining that you're building a kit car from a donor and making your own chassis, or words to that effect. Its what I did (got the letter template from the AshG on the Haynes Roadster forums). They send some other crap through about getting a garage to countersign the document, but its academic as you go through the IVA and they check it all, so don't need it.

Government cuts are closing ALL DVLA local offices
Soon the only option will be online or letter to Swansea

I made up my own
So have many others

I drink to forget
I breath to pi55 my ex wife off (and now my ex partner)

The process for me was as follows:

I arranged a visit to my local DVLA centre, they checked over the car, and issued me with a VIN
The VIN was then stamped into the chassis
The requisite form (forget the number) was signed by my local MOT centre to verfiy that the VIN was actually present on the car
Then once I had my IAC from the IVA test I took it along with the signed form for the VIN to my DVLA
They issued me with a registration number and I also filled out my V55/5 then as it is only for obtaining your road fund licence (tax), nothing to do with getting your VIN or reg.

The whole thing once I had my IAC etc. took around 20 minutes to sort, then me and my HUGE grin trotted down to the motor factors to get a set of number plates made up

Had a VIN number made up using car make year and chassis build number. Stamped the chassis and made a VIN plate up and riveted it to the chassis.
IVA man was a happy bunny and the DVLA (Chelmsford) inspection went without a hitch. V55 was all filled out before the IVA and just the last details added pre DVLA inspection. Never took the car off the trailer at the DVLA, inspection was done in 10 mins by two guys in hi viz jackets who spent more time chatting to me and each other than worrying about the car. They checked VIN plate and engine number, viewed gearbox and diff but never check them in detail. Simples
