Age related plate if donor V5 no longer available

Hi Folks.

Two silly questions from a complete amateur in this area....

If I buy a car, not yet been through IVA, that has a pinto engine, plus gearbox and axle from same vehicle, but seller has long lost the donor vehicle V5, but still has the old registration plate. Canhe just apply for a new V5 and sign the old vehicle over to me, so that I can then apply for an age related plate?

If this does not work, can I use another donor vehicle, swap the engine out for the IVA, and get the plate that way?

Thanks in advance

If its still active (I.e. SORNed and not scrapped and he's just retained the plates) then yes he can (or I think you can as the new owner-might be worth a google) apply for the V5. I scrapped my donor before IVA and had a photocopy of the V5 and a certificate of destruction which you may struggle with if you haven't actually got a vehicle to scrap...however there are people who have been through the IVA with the V5 still and vehicle SORNed so sure they can advise that route (With the new laws though, the car is SORN until its changed so easy to do and forget about)

Alternatively, if you are thinking of an engine change before or shortly after IVA, then you may as well buy your donor and just use that, sticking the Pinto for sale.

One thing you absolutely can't do is apply for the V5 and stick the plates on the kit.

check the number plate on this site
https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

if its listed there, you should be able to get a v5 for it.

You can apply for v5 yes, and you can also send a letter to the DVLA with the v5 telling them the vehicle was scrapped and to remove if from registration if you so wish.
